Focus On: South Philly Focus On: South Philly RSS

By James Zeleniak, Philadelphia Editor

South Philly gets such a bad wrap. But for those in the know, this is a hot ‘hood that’s only gaining traction. So please, no jokes about big hair--it’s a new day on Philly’s South side. And one thing remains the same: Good food is still at the heart of the legendary district.

Where to Eat in South Philly

  1. 1601

    1601 S 10th St, Philadelphia, PA
Enjoy this relative newcomer for its post-modern bar menu, sophisticated beer list and well-considered, affordable wines and discerning music selection.

  2. Pub at Passyunk East

1501 E Passyunk Ave, Philadelphia, PA
Party under a picture of Pope John Paul II. No doubt he’d have wanted it that way. Especially if he was down with a amazing beer selection and rocking juke box.

  3. The Ugly American

1100 S Front St, Philadelphia, PA
What’s with the name? No worries. You won’t be singled out at this friendly South Philly newcomer that’s winning fans for its laidback goodness.

  4. Villa di Roma

    936 S 9th St, Philadelphia, PA
Like visiting the Sapranos old neighborhood or the set of Goodfellas — this old-school, cash only joint takes you back with basic goodness wrapped up in a plate of veal parm with a nice basic Chianti or Peroni perhaps.

  5. Cantina Los Caballitos

1651 E Passyunk Ave, Philadelphia, PA
Memorable margaritas, a convivial vibe, outdoor seating and a popular late-night happy hour make Cantina a strong stand out in a nabe dominated by old-school “red gravy” Italian eateries and traditional corner bars.

  6. Marra's

1734 E Passyunk Ave, Philadelphia, PA
Pizza, mussels red, a plate of calamari and an antipasti makes a meal, especially when downed with a glass or two of Chianti.

  7. Cochon

801 E Passyunk Ave, Philadelphia, PA
Despite a signature dish of Slow-roasted Pork Shoulder over lentils du puy, there is plenty for those who don’t do pork [Steak Frites, Wild Striped Bass, Braised Lamb Shank] at this Queen Village BYOB.

  8. Royal Tavern

937 E Passyunk Ave, Philadelphia, PA
The atmosphere is laid-back, with a deep-red walled, evening-only, pub with local brews and an alt-rock jukebox, opened by the owners of the Khyber.

  9. Vesuvio Restaurant & Bar

    736-38 S 8th St, Philadelphia, PA
Caught between times — not a hipster hang, nor a new trendsetter, and neither an old time red gravy joint — Vesuvio excels with bold bottles of reds, well-seasoned salads, and crab cakes that’ll make you call your mother a bad name.
