Break through your plateau

by macrophysic

Reached a plateau in martial arts as I have? American Fighting Arts offers plenty of expansion. Fluid motions of Shaolin Kuntao offers a welcome respite from hard styles such as TaeKwonDo & TangSooDo. Although cyclic these movements are fast, powerful and highly effective. Shaolin Kuntao is more a martial art than sport. The techniques are street practical, ulike other more sport oriented arts. The synergy between Shaolin Kuntao's forms and their self defense techniques are unparalleled. I have been hard pressed to create the image of a fighting scenario for TKD and TSD forms. Shaolin Kuntao forms are integrated self defense sequences and offer greater potential for imagining actual combat scenarios while performing the form. This is true for beginning as well as advanced forms. Refinement of the form refines self defense skills. The animal forms also provide a mindset or attitude over how the form is executed.

Not for the light at heart

by kuntao13

I have been involved with martial arts for almost 17 years. Six of those years have been spent at A.F.A. If close range personal self defense is what you are looking for, then you need to attend classes at A.F.A. No messing around; this stuff is direct and to the point. Definitely not for the light at heart. Classes are small, the instruction is superb, and this particular style, Shaolin Kuntao, is not found on every corner, in every town, in America. In fact, if you are lucky enough to run across a Kuntao instructor, stick with them. Kuntao is a very progressive art that is finally gaining in popularity; the respect for Kuntao has always been there. Check it out. You will not be disappointed!

  • Pros: Style hard to find., Instruction superb., Application is superb
  • Cons: 20 miles to train!

Hands on application.

by ben_gaspar

Very few martial arts schools, let alone specific styles will teach any application to its students for several years. Application is where it starts. and then build up from there. How to strike, where to strike and why that specific target is being struck. I have been involved in martial arts for 16 years, and been with A.F.A. for 6 years. If self defense is what you want, this is where you will find it. Self defense that WILL get you out of a jam. Realistic self defense. Very much so worth checking out! If personal safety is your #1 concern, A.F.A. will definitely help you out on the self defense side.

  • Pros: one of a kind., awesome value., personal treatment.
  • Cons: none found.

personal instruction, no bs

by sammybaby

Very small class sizes, flexable scheduling, and a focus on sparring and partners training rather than mindless repetition of kata/forms make this school a real find. Definitely worth a look.

  • Pros: Friendly, easy to schedule, good instruction
  • Cons: small facility

My rating system

by johnnykies

This site kicks ass. Not only is Ken Doyle the best teacher in the Philadelphia area but his website even kicks ass. The links are killer, the graphics are excellent...just top notch all the way. Very interesting stuff. Plus, if you want to learn the American fighting arts...Ken's your man. He is the master and years of practice in many different disciplines have made him even better. You can learn practical self-defense skills from Ken! Plus he's cool!!!

This site gets my highest rating!

Realistic Style

by wlsorvelli

I have studied this style for two years and find it to be very realistic. The instructors train you in hand to hand fighting at the start of every class just for warm-up. I would recomend this school for anyone interested in learning a martial art for self defense and a style that you can study for a lifetime and not master.

Tired of McMartial Arts?

by jettasmog

American Fighting Arts is a school that actually teaches a serious art instead of just churning out unqualified "black belts" by the dozen. Small class size, talented instruction, and a dedication to the art is what sets AFA apart from all the chain schools that are more interested in cashing your check than actually teaching you. If you train with Sifu Doyle, you WILL learn a quality art of which you can be proud. I can't recommend it highly enough!!!!!!

  • Pros: Convenient location, Personal instruction, Inexpensive
