Watch the servers at Tony Lukes Sports Bar

by gregcandera

Visited on 6/01/08 and found the food and service measured up to the reputation earned. We each had the famous roast pork and seasoned fries.

Watch the servers: We left a five dollar tip for a twenty-four dollor bill ,cash. We elected to put the meal itself on our credit card. Upon checking our card balance the next morning we found the server had charged us an additional twenty percent on the recipt she submitted. Our reciept clearly shows the total for the meal only. We expressly informed her we had left a cash tip before we left.

  • Pros: Great food and atmosphere
  • Cons: Watch the servers don't double dip on tips if you pay by credit card and leave a cash tip

Not the best anymore

by superman828

their cheesteaks used to be divine, but now they are like everyone else's. you pay way too much money for a steak because they can barely spare the cheese. if you dont mind a steak with hardly any cheese than eat here

  • Pros: the location
  • Cons: the price and def not enough cheese, too hot

Roast Pork Italian - Incredible

by Jerome99RIP

Tony Luke's is a Philly tradition. If you're looking for a cheesesteak or a chicken parm sub, this is the place to go before a Flyers, Phillies or Sixers game. And now they're even open on Sundays before Eagles games! But if you're looking for the absolute best roast pork sandwich on the planet, then Tony Luke's is the place to go. The roast pork Italian comes with either broccoli rabe or spinach rabe and SHARP provolone cheese. Without hesitation I can honestly say this is the single best sandwich I've ever tasted. The pork has a delicious spice, the rolls are cooked on-site, the broccoli rabe has a nice zing to it and the cheese is melted heaven. Honestly, if you're a Philly guy, you know this place. If you're not and happen to be in Philly, do yourself a favor and head to Tony Luke's. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

PS: They also serve breakfast! The scrapple, egg and cheese on a hoagie roll is insane. If I still lived in Philly, I'd weigh 300 pounds from eating here every day - LOL!

  • Pros: Everything on the menu is delicious. Not hyperbole either.
  • Cons: Standing in a mile long line in the heart of the summer isn't fun but it's worth it,

Won't try again

by hootyj

My one time in Philadelphia rather than passing thru the airport, thought I'd try "the best cheesesteak in town", according to the ratings and peoples comments. Tony Luke's was a BIG disappointment. Bland meat and skimpy portions, almost no cheese and unremarkable bread. We tried two different types to compare; one with whiz and one with sharp but both had almost no flavor unless you added the hot peppers or hot sauce. The onion rings were OK but greasy, slightly undercooked and nothing special. (I added mine to the sandwich to boost the taste.) Next time I'm in town I'll try some place else.

  • Pros: Good for people watching
  • Cons: Parking, long lines

#1 in my book

by kateyjo

People can argue who's got the best cheesesteaks for hours. It's all a matter of taste. MY taste says Tony Lukes is the best around. When the wintry winds stop blowing and the Phillies start playing we always stop at Tony Lukes on our way to the game. Yes, there's one at the stadium but it has proven inconsistant. Some days great; some days not so great. We're never disappointed on Oregon Ave.

  • Pros: best cheesesteaks!
  • Cons: parking but who cares?

Quaint it ain't, but it doesn't get more authentic than this

by mhsouder

I don't leave a trip to Philly without bringing some Tony's hoagies home with me. It isn't tucked across the street from the Liberty Bell and might not be a tourist's dream of an ideal Philadelphia, but South Philly has its own character and pride, and you'll find a rich cross-section of that at Tony's. They make the bread on-site, and the cheesesteaks and hoagies they build on the bread are nothing short of outstanding. I've not tried the signature pork sandwich with broccoli rabe, but you can bet I will on my next trip.

  • Pros: quality of food, variety of menu choices
  • Cons: service can be brusque but is always efficient

if you are in South Philly, go somewhere better

by ktodaaren

Besides being overpriced and over crowded Tony Luke's food is terrible! If you are in South Philly then there are plenty of choices that would serve you better and be more pleasant as they take your money. The only conclusion I have to it's popularity is it's location. The steak is rough and overcooked, and dare I say fatty and the roast pork is dry. For those of you raving about chicken cutlets...here's a little secret, the pre battered frozen chicken that you are eating isn't that hard to cook....save a few bucks and keep on driving.

  • Pros: nothing like grease to coat the belly after a hard night of drinking~!
  • Cons: the food.

Is your wallet holding less these days... this is the place to go

by lyndalee

This is the place to grab a sandwich...

they are famous for their cheese steak sandwiches

but in my opinion their italian chicken cutlet with broccoli rabe is divine.

For under 20.00 two people can have sandwiches and drinks and feel sated.

Atmosphere... definitely needs work but the food certainly

surpasses any expectation.

  • Pros: wonderful sandwiches
  • Cons: outside seating arrangements

Best Cheesesteak in Philly, bar none!!

by nittanybob

Try the others, not worth naming, they cannot hang with Tony Lukes. Simply the best. Not a better cheesesteak on the planet.

  • Pros: Best Cheesesteak on the Planet
  • Cons: Rustic, to say the least, Philly atmosphere...
