Very Disappointing
by jrmaly at Citysearch
Maybe I'm missing something, but my first taste of a Jim's cheesesteak was very disappointing. I'm no expert, but I've tasted Tony Luke's, Pat's, and Geno's, and this didn't come close. Tony Luke's will leave you wanting more. Jim's will leave you saying "That was OK, but I could have gone to (fill in the blank)." Maybe I was there on a bad night, because the service wasn't that rude, either. And as far as real Philly atmosphere, those other places have attitude. Jim's has tourists who don't know any better.
- Pros: Given the alternatives, none that I can think of. No wait, the rolls are really good.
- Cons: It's on South Street.
Don't waste your time....

Our concierge recommended Jim's, but I wish we would have stuck with our plan of going to Dessandro's. The sandwich was just O.K. - dry meat and grease. The service at the counter was horrible!!! I think the chef thought he was funny, but I found it just plain rude.
Tourist Trap

I can't believe people say this place is good. The people who work there are IGNORANT. The Steaks are chopped up to hide all the fat. They cook with water, which dries them out. It end up tasting like the toppings because it lack flavor. It is a disgrace that this is the first impression someone has of a cheesesteak in Philly. Go to Steve's, the best in my opinon (South Bustleton off Cottman in the North East) or Pat's and Geno's (10th and Passyunk) at least at these places it tastes like a cheesesteak.
- Pros: South Street
- Cons: Ignorant Staff, Lousy Cheesesteak, Tourist Trap
Wasted Trip

Growing up in the midwest, I had about the same tasting cheesesteaks at the local foodcourt in the mall. So on this recent trip to Philly was disappointing. The only thing that was impressive was the experience of getting cheesesteaks late at night in Philly. If I had to do it over again I would take the cab ride to Pat's.
These Stink

I still cannot understand why Jim's always makes "The Best.." List. Geno's and Pat's far exceed Jim's in quality and taste. The only reason it is "A Best" is because of it's location. It is on par with any other average steak house. Their meet is dry and their rolls are weak. Please stop putting this place in the top 10. Have a Pat's or Geno's.
- Cons: The Cheesesteaks
