Great bar.
by jessicachole
Chaucers WAS our favorite neighborhood bar...until they closed it down and replaced it with some stupid yuppie bar/restaurant. Chaucers had the best burgers and an awesome staff. Never had a bad experience there. It was a great place to go by yourself, with one other person, or even with a whole group of people!
- Pros: Best bar in the neighborhood
- Cons: It closed...
Now Closed!
by SorarAmy
I loved this place! Sadly - it is now closed. Went there last night and the door was locked and several neighborhood people walking by said it closed three weeks ago. R.I.P. Chaucer's.
- Pros: It was cool
- Cons: Now Closed!
Good beer, bad food
by mncl425
The outdoor seating is nice and so is the beer list. The bartender was also very friendly. However, the food left much to be desired. The place is fine for a drink.
- Pros: good beer selection, cheap
- Cons: terrible food
low-key and comfortable
by kittybean
i'm something of a chaucer's regular and am never disappointed. good, affordable food and drinks ... none of that pretentious downtown attitude ... friendly bartenders ... just a comfortable spot. it's a great place to catch up with friends if you're looking for a chill atmosphere. there aren't many bells and whistles, but who cares? the simplicity is nice.
- Pros: affordable, good pub food
- Cons: bathrooms aren't always the cleanest
Like mulling over drinks at your English professor's house

In Short
Consider this a cozy hangout for both students of literature and students of drinking. Stained glass, a series of Middle East-inspired lanterns and tapestry rugs on the ceiling give thelong, narrow room the look of an eccentric professor's study. It's the niceties that give Chaucer's a quietly loyal fan base: a menu of eclectic fare for vegetarians and carnivores, a jukebox stocked with timeless selections that's free weeknights and friendly service.
Best Burgers
by golddh
I have tried all the burger joints in the city and this is the best one. Burgers are absolutely delicious, great beer list, you can always get a seat and the prices are reasonable. We just had a birthday there for 20 people and they were wonderful. Highly recommended.
- Pros: Food, Beer List, Seating

The food is good, including some of the esoteric stuff. The beer selection is excellent. And happy hour is a very fine deal indeed.
- Pros: good beer, good food, character
- Cons: none
Great beer selection, Good food

Chaucer's has changed direction twice in the last year; a misguided attempt at upscale dining has given way to a refined sense of what Chaucer's has always been: a great neighborhood bar/restaurant where the focus is good beer, a solid menu, and good people. The 12 regional microbrews on tap are always fresh and the standard bar fare menu is enhanced by some more adventurous specials that have ranged from just okay to absolutely delicious. Only con would be that on busier nights the kitchen may get backed up. Otherwise, it's good to see the locals coming back!
- Pros: Beer, food, Service, atmosphere, friendly crowd
No longer the old favorite
by crimekate
I used to LOVE this place... but the change of ownership has not been kind to it. The food used to be marvelous -- now it's boring and, frankly, kind of disgusting. The menu has almost nothing but burgers - and you'll be sorry after you eat one of them. They also have some pricey nightly specials that seem a bit, um, "ambitious", given what I've seen come out of that kitchen. I'm not that brave. They still have good beer on tap, but the generous buy-back policy for regulars is gone... with that and the loss of the good food, we really have no reason to go here anymore. Too bad! Chaucer's, we miss you!
- Pros: good beer on tap, friendly bartender
- Cons: terrible food
New ownership, but still good
by myrddins
it's been a rocky year and the place is not the same... but still worth a visit. Most of the quirks and freebees that kept its fanbase loyal (like the jabberwocky recitation) went out the door with the dearly departed owner. In the door came a new guy with a different idea -- open the upstairs with pool and foosball and cigarettes, open the outside to a cafe, change the menu (a lot), change the staff (a lot)... thank the stars the Scott and Jack are still behind the bar! Even post-facelift, Chaucers feels more like a close-knit village local than a city bar. Walk in, and you're family.
- Pros: staff, atmosphere, food/beer
