Major disappointment

Based on the other, stellar reviews, I wish I could find *that* Cresheim Cottage Cafe! The one I ate at last night was suffused with fireplace smoke (waaaaay past ambience) and presented unremarkable and undercooked food. My entree, fish & chips, took nearly an hour to arrive and was still partly raw/doughy when served. We politely asked for the check, minus the sushi, and left. I must say that our overworked waiter was very gracious (and most likely caught in the middle -- I've heard that the chef is also the owner, and if that's true then the waitstaff would have little say in what goes out to the tables).
I believe in supporting neighborhood businesses and when I find a place I like, I tell everyone I know. But based on my experience with this restaurant, I would not go back -- and based on my impression of the owner & staff, my feedback to them in person would not be welcome. All in all, a real shame.

The food is interesting and tasty for the price. Our waitress was very patient with us because it took us awhile to get seated and decide what to eat. All of the salads are yummy. The desserts are good as well.
They must have accidentally knocked over a Morton's salt into the mashed potatoes the night we ate there...they were really salty! I'm assuming that the chef/kitchen staff might have had an off-day.

This place is my home away from home when eating out. I love a place where the service is attentive, responsive, but not overly intrusive or bothersome. They seem to have achieved the perfect balance. They attract an interesting diverse crowd. I
I don't eat meat, but the rest of my household does. The menu is interesting with daily specials and seasonal changes. My teenage son thinks the mussels in white sauce are to die for. My daughter longs for their chicken wings. I love their soups, salads, crab cakes, tilapia, salmon, various funky veggie dishes. And if you need comfort food--ask if they have their homemade mac and cheese.
We also appreciate the artistry of each dish that's served and the fact that they use locally grown farm produce in season. One day we strolled in to catch an early bite before heading downtown and my husband really had a craving for a juicy fresh grilled burger. Wasn't on the dinner menu. He asked. The waiter checked to make sure they had fresh ingredients available and my husband's craving was fulfilled! Whatever you ask, they aim to please. Unlike a much more expensive place we took friends to recently--Waterworks Cafe on the Schulykill--where we asked for a roll or bread with our appetizer $12 salads and lobster bisque and were told by a flippant waitress "we don't do bread on Saturdays before dinner." They had bread, they just wouldn't serve it unless it was part of the entree ordered (like a burger). And the food was served luke warm and greasy (limp fries, wilted salads)--it had been sitting too long. We figured we paid for the view--but we should have gone to Cresheim instead!
We've taken scores of friends and family out-of-towners to Cresheim. They've all become enthusiasts who ask "can we go there next time?" I've also taken business associates many times and have never been disappointed. So try it. You'll love it.

My partner and I eat at the Cottage regularly, and it is awesome. The menu changes each season, and it seems to just get better and better. We love the atmosphere, especially the outdoor area in the spring/summer and the fireplace room in the winter. The staff is great, and they are always friendly and make us feel at home. Cresheim Cottage is a great asset to Mt. Airy. Try the crab cakes!

We went for lunch and the food was tasty. We sat outside and it felt sometimes we were forgotten. It took a long time to get refills for our drinks even when there weren't many people. I had the bread pudding, yummy. I recommend it for lunch since you don't have to make a reservation. We enjoyed our visit and I look forward trying the brunch on Sunday.

In Short
Cresheim Cottage, built in 1748, saw both the first shots of the Battle of Germantown and the first stagecoach line pass in front of its doorstep. The inside decor of the cottage retains this colonial feel, with sparse art and white walls. Basic American staples: Pancakes, bagels and other dough-based items abound at brunch. Dinner specialties include Long Island duckling and Cajun-dusted sea bass.

We actually learned about Cresheim Cottage on Citysearch. It's in Mt. Airy, and the R7 let us off one short block away. You definitely need a reservation for a Friday night. We had to wait about ten minutes (with no res), but it was worth it. We started with the Dip Trio, and then I had the Crab Cakes and my date had the Softshell Crabs. Really really really amazing. Our waitress was great... professional and polite. Everything was just so good that I had to come back to Citysearch and write about it.

Oh my god. First of all, I never knew that Philadelphia included an area as beautiful and green as Mt. Airy! I had heard about Cresheim Cottage, and finally made the trip down Lincoln Drive. This restaurant is not to be missed! We had the best dinner sitting outside in the garden with a view of the sunset. I had the crabcakes, and my wife had softshell crabs. We were blown away. We also had the Dip Trio, and bread pudding. The food was incredible and the service was awesome. I highly recommend this gem of a restaurant!

The enjoyment of this Mt. Airy landmark's dining experience begins when you walk in the door. Your choices include dining in a cozy downstairs dining room with fireplace, a beautiful sunroom, or and outside patio overlooking a lush green expance, not the traffic-clogged streets of downtown's eateries. Your server will lead you through the expansive wine menu and inform you of the specials. A variety of warm breads are offered. Then your food selection arrives; the plate is artwork the tastes sublime. Blends of visual perfection and palate combine to offer a wonderful eating experience. Leave room for desert, the offerings include selections from the Night Kitchen and Cottage original's. Be sure to try the house made chocolate bread pudding.
Dinner, lunch or Sunday Brunch it's time to try or come back to the Cresheim Cottage for a wonderful experience, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
