They support criminals

by daydreams130

Uh, just so you people know, if you care, the owners of this place are part of the Uhuru radical movement. The money they make may go to a good cause, but the people themselves are not good people. They believe they shouldn't be held to the laws of society, and actually celebrated the criminals that shot police officers in this city. Not just saying this, look it up.

Best Used Furniture Around!

by sarahbaba

This store rocks! I love going in here every week and just browsing. Right now they are have a huge sale and it is great. I just found out that everything that they get is donated to them and that is why they always have a changing variety of furniture! Yeah, the furniture is donated to them and they raise money for this nonprofit (which I found online when I looked up Uhuru Furniture in Google-African People's Education & Defense Fund). Basically, this place has great buys and in a sinking economy, you can still feel good about shopping there.

Good and bad donating experience

by profviolet

Noble concept, worthy cause: good. Asked for photos of the furniture I wished to donate: good idea. Many hours after I sent the photos, they called me and said the pieces were good but they had no truck available for the day I needed it (contrary to what I was told initially): bad. Called me next day and said that a truck was available after all: great! Movers came earlier than expected: OK. One mover insisted on talking on his cell phone while lifting my queen size sofa bed over my marble dining table: BEYOND THE PALE! This man took risky behavior while talking on a cell phone to a new and bizarre level. Fortunately, nothing was damaged but this certainly does not inspire confidence.

  • Pros: Charitable concept: good for donor, good for customer, good for charity.
  • Cons: Incomprehensibly reckless mover

Are you people crazy??!!

by DD57

OMG this is my favorite furniture store in the world!!! I think new furniture prices are INSANE and this place gets awesome real wood furniture that won't crumble into pieces and some of it is even contemporary stuff only a few years old or something and you pay significantly less. Seriously, I go in here all the time and there is always new stuff that I want. OH GOD I wish I had a mansion just to fit it all in. And the fact that it is non-profit too is awesome too.

Don't listen to the haters, just go to their furniture blog and see all the great stuff and great prices. And everyone there is friendly and professional. SHEESH!!!

www.uhurufurniturephilly.blogspot DOT com - I really should keep this a secret but there is enough furniture here to go around. :-)

Write your own reviews much?

by nstarkey

All of the positive reviews on this site were clearly written by Uhuru staff. I actually have bought and continue to buy things there, only because it's close to my home and work and sometimes you'll find unique things. However, their 'cause' is bizarre, especially considering almost all of the staff, especially those in charge, are white. Their print material on 'where your money goes' is pretty convoluted and never really adequately explains the 'African People's Defense Fund". It's seriously a hilarious to watch these ridiculous white people walking around in "ReparationsNow!" tshirts. That being said, everything is completely over-priced and they rarely bargain with you, even if you're reasonable, since 'everything goes to a good cause'. They actually were selling on old, stained Ikea Lack side table for $20 when it sells AT IKEA NEW for $10!!!!! This place is really a joke and unless you're just plain lazy and don't care where your money goes (like me) don't bother

  • Pros: sometimes can find unique pieces
  • Cons: completely overpriced, more junk than good stuff, staff is weirdly pushy about the 'cause'

Happy to Donate to Uhuru Furniture!

by littlelollypop

I was looking for a way to deal with all my furniture when I moved back to the West Coast, and I am so glad I found Uhuru! I called and they were able to come out a few days later which was totally amazing. The movers were really nice, they came inside and picked up my stuff, even carried stuff down the stairs! these guys were better movers than the moving company I paid to bring my stuff in here! I had a very positive experience working with Uhuru.

I have been to the store too, and it is so small I can see why they have to be somewhat selective, it makes it great on the shopping end. The stuff they sell is great and the prices are awesome.

I was also really happy to donate my furniture to support the cause of education and economic justice for the African community and the programs they are supporting, as opposed to having it go into a land fill and damage to the environment.

I totally recommend this organization!

  • Pros: supports a good cause, lively and interesting ambience, great music, every time I shop there's new stuff
  • Cons: it is hard to find parking

Too picky

by BV2009

you donate furniture that is perfectly good condition, but they are very selective in picking furniture. The movers who came to pick it up were rude.

Anything but losers...

by imjustkas

Uhuru Furniture is an amazing place. Everytime I am in there I wonder how hey can fit so much furniture in such a small space. I have heard that sometimes they are 'selective' when choosing what furniture to pick up for free as a donation, but I think I understand why, it is a really small space! The guys in there move so much furniture its incredible. The people that work there are so nice, always eager to help me and work with me. Also, the cause of the store, to raise money for the African People's Education and Defense Fund, is excellent, and the people that work there all want to make a serious change in the way things work now. I do not know any losers or clowns that work there, just a bunch of politically conscious people working for justice for the African Comunity. Oh yeah, and the furniture that they sell is awesome.

Why would anyone buy from these clowns?

by shockcorridor9

If you want your money to go to a ridiculous pseudo-radical organization that employs a whole bunch of truly silly white people with over the top racial guilt, go right ahead and drop some dollars on these losers. I watched a driver of one of their trucks back into and destroy a beautiful old tree on Chestnut Street across from the Mutter Museum. I guess caring for the Earth is not on these "activists'" radar since they're too busy sucking up to prove their "cred" with their African overlords. Seriously people, do NOT give your money to this idiotic brood of racialist cult members.
