I was looking for a way to deal with all my furniture when I moved back to the West Coast, and I am so glad I found Uhuru! I called and they were able to come out a few days later which was totally amazing. The movers were really nice, they came inside and picked up my stuff, even carried stuff down the stairs! these guys were better movers than the moving company I paid to bring my stuff in here! I had a very positive experience working with Uhuru. I have been to the store too, and it is so small I can see why they have to be somewhat selective, it makes it great on the shopping end. The stuff they sell is great and the prices are awesome. I was also really happy to donate my furniture to support the cause of education and economic justice for the African community and the programs they are supporting, as opposed to having it go into a land fill and damage to the environment. I totally recommend this organization!

Pros: supports a good cause, lively and interesting ambience, great music, every time I shop there's new stuff

Cons: it is hard to find parking

you donate furniture that is perfectly good condition, but they are very selective in picking furniture. The movers who came to pick it up were rude.

Uhuru Furniture is an amazing place. Everytime I am in there I wonder how hey can fit so much furniture in such a small space. I have heard that sometimes they are 'selective' when choosing what furniture to pick up for free as a donation, but I think I understand why, it is a really small space! The guys in there move so much furniture its incredible. The people that work there are so nice, always eager to help me and work with me. Also, the cause of the store, to raise money for the African People's Education and Defense Fund, is excellent, and the people that work there all want to make a serious change in the way things work now. I do not know any losers or clowns that work there, just a bunch of politically conscious people working for justice for the African Comunity. Oh yeah, and the furniture that they sell is awesome.

If you want your money to go to a ridiculous pseudo-radical organization that employs a whole bunch of truly silly white people with over the top racial guilt, go right ahead and drop some dollars on these losers. I watched a driver of one of their trucks back into and destroy a beautiful old tree on Chestnut Street across from the Mutter Museum. I guess caring for the Earth is not on these "activists'" radar since they're too busy sucking up to prove their "cred" with their African overlords. Seriously people, do NOT give your money to this idiotic brood of racialist cult members.

Seriously, Uhuru Furniture sells all real wood furniture like dressers and chests and cabinets and great couches and sofabeds and mirrors and lamps and tons of other stuff. Everything in the store is donated to the store in support of the African People's Education & Defense Fund and they pick up donations of furniture for free, and it is a tax deductible donation. The store is so small and the staff is mostly volunteer, so it is hard to be perfect, but the staff at the store really does strive to sell great stuff at great prices, and they really do strive to pick up furniture from all over the city, 6 days a week fast and free! So, go to the store as soon as you can and shop, donate, or volunteer! You will have a great experience at Uhuru Furniture.

Pros: The store sells a variety of great stuff! Also, who else do you know that will pick up furniture from your place in a convenient one-hour time slot for free??

Cons: There is not that much parking at the store as it is located in Center City, Philadelphia.

I recommend not using this company to pick up your furniture. Their customer service is terrible; they are unresponsive to telephone calls; and their "selectivity" when it comes to furniture will you leave you in a bind when it comes time to move out of your apartment. It was the worst experience I have ever had with respect to a company's customer service. It is, of course, an excellent cause; this does not give them the right, however, to treat their customers like garbage.

I would say that at least half, if not more, of the furniture in my apartment came from this store. They always have a variety of items, new and old, in great shape and in fixer-upper shape. The sales staff is always extremely friendly and knowledgeable. They will take down your information if you are looking for one specific item and call you if something similar to what you are looking for comes in. GREAT STORE!!!

Pros: Friendly, Great Selection, CHEAP!!!

Cons: Parking in Area Tough, Small Store

What could be better than finding fabulous treasures while supporting economic development and social justice for the black community? Uhuru Furniture is just amazing! New stuff in every day and a group of staff and volunteers that provide customer service like no other place in the tri-state area!

No matter what you're looking for, you can find it at Uhuru Furniture. The space is small, but highly active - every day the displays change with freshly donated pieces. Not only is the customer service wonderful, but you don't have to feel guilty about spending money on yourself, because it's a fundraiser for justice and economic development for the Black community. It's even better than charity, because it's controlled by the African working-class themselves, through the African People's Education & Defense Fund.

Pros: always new things, great prices, politically active

Cons: , parking is difficult, sometimes crowded
