you have to be kidding

We crossed town via subway and walking to get to this "wonderful" highly rated bar. What a dive. the bartender was nice but that was about all i have to say that is positive. Yes the tap beer is skunked. If you go, order something out of a bottle. If you like smoke then go there. If you like going to the bathroom with no lock on the door then go there. We were there on a Tue. The guy at the next table had his computer with him and he was asleep sitting up. We took a picture of him that i wish I could put up here. That's how exciting this place was. Maybe it was better in the old days but not today.

Frank's was Peter Maclaren's favorite place

The first bar I legally drank at on my 21st birthday and the night I hooked up with Peter Maclaren. Peter was well known and well loved by so many, I had to write something here. Peter died this past February 2009 and I was struggling with how to remember him and convey these feelings to others from "back then". For anyone from the late 60's, early 70's who hung out at Frank's, we lost a great friend when we lost Pete.

skunked beer

They've served me skunked beer at least three times. They get credit for living up to their name, but seriously, that's gross.

It also seems to collect some fairly unhappy looking people sometimes.

Not a fan.

Must visit!

Never would have thought that I could leave Huntingdon, PA and feel so at home in Philadelphia. Loved this place. Anyone should feel welcome here unless you think you are better than the rest of the world. The bartender and the doorman were awesome. Strange to go to a place with unisex bathrooms, but at least there was something new about it. Had plans on going somewhere else later, but we were so comfortable there that we closed the night out there. Must say that we were thrown off for a minute that there was no sign outside that said "Dirty Franks". The famous "Franks" on the walls outside gave it away though. Would recommend to anyone who wants a fun time in Philadelphia.

Wed. visit,

After being at the flower show in March 2008 we went to one of our favorite city past times, pub crawling.. We have been to many of the pubs in the area.. We stopped in another bar "F Ms" first and spoke with the bartender "H'. We asked her to recommend a place we may not have heard of or been to.. She recommended "D Fs" where her boyfrinds works. We did meet him, but he was not working.. We had a great time; the bartender "B" was effecient and fun.. The 8 or so people we saw there were really friendly. It was not too busy since it was mid afteroon.. The beer choices, "B", the other patrons and the great bloody mary beautiful blue eyes... Hey, maybe I had too many beers that I am commenting on a cute canine.. Thank you "H" for the recommendation and thank you "B" for making us feel at home...

......franks is what it is, a corner dive bar in a neighborhood that went upscale long ago....despite that it holds its character and ambience....personalities a plenty and if you have the slightest inclination for socializing the patrons are approachable gregarious....

.the staff is at times your best friend or if you are rude to them, they can as quickly be rude to you, but that in itself lends to the mystique of this venerable bar that outlasted prohibition, (word to the wise, waving money at a bartender anywhere in the world gets you ignored, but especially at franks)...

drinks are cheap, shots start @ $2 and for $15 you can get drunk and leave a decent tip...daily specials range from $5 bucket of ponies to fantastic sunday bloody mary's...has weekly pub quiz on wednesday nights and darts everynight...has taken to the smoking ban and is no, somewhat less dirty than in days of yore.....

if visiting phila, franks will give you more stories to tell the kids back home than the liberty bell, just remember to leave the seat up when you leave...

Super Friendly! Great Art!

Everyone was very nice, a perfect fit for anyone who is human. What a great place to have a drink or four! Their art is another plus++ with all original, and experimental work on the Off the Wall Gallery - Wall - I felt right at home. We're glad we finally made it down to visit, see you all again real soon. Stay true to your roots. Cheers to Dirty Franks Bar, and To Your Eclectic People.

Wow, an amazing local dive bar. They don't even have a sign. If you belong, you oughta know where it is. Dirty Frank's used to be just Frank's but then its cheap beer attracted medical students who promptly renamed the place. And its true...the tables are always wet, the soap in the bathroom is served in a shot glass, and the pitchers can be scratched cleaner. But Frank's is home to amazing assortment of people and events. The bartenders have masters degrees, the left hand wall is an art gallery, you can bring your own food, and the jukebox is the best in the city.
