Great selection

by ayleigh

I was in town for a week last year ( as a guest of someone attending a conference) and I ate there almost every day. There was plenty to choose from and it helped that it was right across the street from the convention center. I (being from the west coast) was introduced to cheese steaks, which were great.

It was crowded, especially during lunch but I didn't think it was too expensive. I also loved all the little gifts that I was able to find for friends and family.

  • Pros: selection of food, gifts
  • Cons: crowded

Best variety of food

by SunshineMary

Awesome experience, I could have spent the whole day there. It's huge in there! We ate at the Amish diner. The food was fantastic, plentiful, reasonable...what more could you ask for...as for service....very good.

  • Pros: Many ethnic foods as well as good American fare--so lots of choice
  • Cons: Some places only take cash, very crowded at times

A chain-free hodgepodge of eateries and fast-food stands makes for an authentic Philadelphia eating experience.

In Short
Amish vendors take orders on cordless phones just across the way from a kebab seller; there's vegetarian takeout steps away from the butcher, all contained in a restored structure that once accommodated commuters arriving in trains, but now catering largely to suburban visitors. The eateries, bakeries, markets and diners offer plenty of choices for groups in the city for a few days, whether they're sightseeing or attending the sci-fi comic-con in the adjoining Convention Center.

GREAT FOOD!

by tnemevomeht

Best and cheapest produce in Philly! For breakfast or lunch try the Down Home Diner (the bacon is amazing, burgers are huge, and the line moves fast). Famous Fourth Street Cookie Company is Great! (Giant cookies loaded with chips) Try the fruit smoothie place called four seasons! (get the tropical, order it by number) Fischers soft pretzels are classic! (go for the butter on top) Looking for vegetables, use Iovines produce. The spice terminal has a huge variety of cooking extras.

  • Pros: Inexpensive, Great Food, Good parking

A Philly Treat

by Ariadne

You can spend an enjoyable day here having breakfast, lunch and then take something home for dinner. The best: Termini. Salumeria, Downtown Cheese, Old City Coffee (have a mocha froth), the Pennsylvania General Store and Foster's. Not to mention the great breads at Le Bus and Metropolitan. Love the Amish merchants and Diener's rotisserie chickens. South American Folklore is great for alpaca sweaters and scarves. The Market merchants are some of the best people in Philly.

  • Pros: friendly merchants, best food, real Philly atmospher
  • Cons: noisy, need more tables

Add this landmark to your day

by bluehensfan

The Reading Treminal Market is one of the cultural gems in Philadelphia and should be on your list of places to visit in Philadelphia. The market has over eighty merchants that offer produce, meats, fish, groceries, flowers, crafts, candies, ethnic foods, and things like cookware and clothing. The food from the Amish merchants is not to be missed, including delicious breakfasts (try the Dutch Eating Place) and soft pretzels (from Fisher's). There are also fabulous baked goods in the market as well as other regional specialties. Try the canolli from Termini Brother's (and say Hi! to Marge) and get some butter cookies (the flattened out ones) from Braverman's. Also great are the sandwiches from DiNic's, the ribs and chicken at Delilah's, Mexican food at the 12th St. Cantina, and ice cream from Bassett's. You won't go away hungry from this place!

The Reading Terminal Market is a must for both locals and tourists. It has a terrific variety of fresh foods, both raw ingredients and premade delights. It's a great way to spend an early Saturday morning or a lunch break!
