Army / Navy place to eat

by CrazyTom

I have been comming to Philadelphia from Boston, home of the best seafood, every year the Army Navy game is in Philly. Every year my fellow classmates get together at this restaurant for some great grub, delicious drinks and good old fashion fun. I know it has been opened for a long time for a restaurant because I can't remember not eating here but each year it is the same great food. As we are taught in the military it is all about getting it done with teamwork. Well this team sure did it again tonight. Same great crabcakes, good mussels they have even added fish tacos for my San Diego buddy. How can you walk out of a place with 12 buds and we paid less than $40 a head drinks and all. They even have a liter of wine, we got 6 glasses out of it, for around $20 bucks.

I am in town until sunday. I maybe back for lunch tomorrow.

  • Pros: smiling faces and helpful service
  • Cons: too cheap

Unbelievable value .....and why would sally spend time in the bathrooms

by bigcheeseneversmells

I have to laugh at the last few postings about this restaurant. Did the owner clean house and fire the incompetent employees and they are writing reviews that are trying to hurt him? Looks that way to me. Some time pettiness gets the better of people with no job, no life and nothing to do but try to hurt others. Maybe they spent to much time in the bathrooms with the knickers around their ankles and not doing what they were suppose to do. That way they wouldn't have to smell their own feces and complain about it.

Some things in life are so obvious it smells. Citysearch allows anyone to write anything about a restaurant, hotel, bar, that is what is so great about the internet. So bring it on Sally, and all the other names you decide to use to trash the restaurant. Why not spend the energy looking for employment...oh thats right you are trying to collect unemployment and your claim was dismissed because you never showed up for work or were drunk on the job. Whatever.

I will read the next few reviews knowing someone was fired and has nothing to do but bad mouth others

  • Pros: great food and drink

Very bad.

by seriously1111

Wow, this place was awful.

Saturday night (8pm) and there were maybe 30% of the tables full. Never a good sign.

Ten minutes until we saw our waiter. He seemed totally out of it (mumbling, having to come back over to retake our order because he didn't write it down the first time). He didn't make eye contact and shuffled off.

Our appetizers were horrendous. The grilled octopus was so tough that it was inedible. The $12 Lobster mac was a watery disaster. We wanted to send it back but we didn't see our waiter again until the check (a non-english speaking bus-person brought the entrees). No drink refills.

The entrees were below average. Oversauced fish = a waste. The food was just bad. The tuna had a funky flavor. The shrimp were stringy.

Since the service was so bad we ended up tipping him 10% instead of our usual 20. When we checked our credit card, he put an extra $10.00 for a tip! A nasty call to the restaurant had the $10 reversed on the card. They wouldn't exactly admit that he did it, but they also reversed it very quickly when asked for a photocopy of the signed receipt

A Great find in Historic Old City

by Sallyanne23

Came upon this rest. by accident, but have no regrets! I was in Philadelphia for my birthday and my husband decided to take me to dinner here. We got our reservations and wound up still waiting for 20 mins, which was definately worth it. I ordered steamed Maine lobster and my husband ordered a NY strip steak and we shared an appetizer of octopus salad. Let me tell you, everything from start to finish was amazing! So DELICIOUS!!! My lobster came with a lemony buttery sauce which was so rich and flavorful, (not like the oily Red Lobster stuff) The crab legs were perfectly done and tender, juicy and succulent! My husbands rib eye was just as amazing, cooked the way he ordered it, juicy, flavorful and tender. I highly recommend Philadelphia Fish! The service was great and the ambiance was very romantic. The perfect place for a delicious birthday dinner!

A Good Experience

by drummerboy2

I had a wonderful dining experience last Sat. night when my date & I happened to wander in Phila. Fish & Co. We really had no intentions to eat a full course dinner but the food and our service was so impressive we stayed for a "soup to nuts " dining experience. Our waiter, I believe his name was Warren was very knowledgeable, attentive, polite, and friendly.( My date was very impressed by this gentleman.)

I must admit our food matched the service, and our expectations were exceeded, as well. Our dinner started with a bowl of their Fish Chowder, it was simply delicious (light cream base, lots of fish and veggies). Our second course was an Asian Shrimp Cocktail and a Lobster roll. We were really taken back by these two appetizers.....they were superb. I had the shrimp cocktail...( best I've ever had...different flavors with shrimp which included endemame beans and kimchee.)My date had the lobster roll...nice soft hotdog roll with this amazing lobster salad, with big pieces of lobster.....I don't remember being able to even get a good lobster roll in the Philadelphia area!

Our entees consisted of a Tuna dish, which was a play on "fish & chips"..the Tuna was fried on the outside and rare in the center..( which the server recommended)..THE BEST! The other entree was a grilled whole fish ( Striped Bass) it came with fresh carrots and english peas which included a portion of cous cous.

The fish was grilled to perfection, alittle crispy on the skin which I love to eat, as well. Also, there was no bone involved in the eating process because it was what they call a " french Cut" no bones.

We shared a blueberry cobbler which was served warm with Bassets vanilla ice cream...and coffee.

It was really a GREAT dinner and I would recommend this establishment to anybody who appreciates good food and service.

Philadelphia Fish - "I'm sorry we are out of that too"

by MichC

This is the WORST of Philadelphia not the best as they say on thier Website. I took a VERY important client there for lunch. I usually go to a very well known steak house for lunch, Smith and Wolensky but my client wanted seafood...BIG MISTAKE choosing the Phiadelphia Fish at 2nd and Chestnut. The server was wonderful woman named Mary Ann. Mary Ann should think about a different place of employment becuse I cannot see this place being in business too much longer. THREE times our server came back to tell us they were out of something that was on the menu. She looked more embarassed each time. Once we finally got whatever they had LEFT, it was mediocre at best. I could have taken him to Arthur Treachers Fish and Chips and had just as good fish. I would never spend the time to review a restaurant unless it almost cost me a client like this one did. I had to apologize to a man who is going to pay my firm over a million dollars in the next three years about MY choice in restaurants. I have put my people on notice - They are NEVER to take a client to the Philadelphia Fish. Good Luck trying to stay in business,

  • Pros: nice place to look at not to eat at
  • Cons: Terrible Food - very poor management / ownership

I table was constanly being attack by flies it was just two at first and then iwhen I food came it actually turned to aboout 10 of them it was digusting we had to ask the waiter to move our table which he apologized profusely. But the drinks were ok a little watered down, But the desserts were horrible my creme brulee tasted like paste, My firends ice cream was melted before it go to the table. I will never it here again

Drink and be merry, eating thats another story

by diningdiva03

Okay so it was my boyfriend's birthday so I figured lets go somewhere different, take a risk. When you first walk in its cozy, warm, and welcoming, I sit at the bar to wait for my boyfriend because I was early and I ordered a long island iced tea which was great. I also chatted it up with the bartender asking her what she would recommend and she was so friendly and gave great.suggestions. Not super busy for a saturday night but I think I kind of know why. My boyfriend and I were seated and I started with the fish chowder, he had the shrimp. The soup was okay it was not the best but its was just okay. My boyfriend on the other hand loved his shrimp. Our entrees were left to the imagination I had the seafood bolognese which was a pasta dish that was suppose to be served in a tomato cream sauce with different kinds of seafood. the sauce was greasy and the pasta was thick, I ALSO KEPT FINDING SCALES IN MY FOOD. My had the butterfish which he thought was great. And then the bill comes almost $90 dollars for what I thought was not the best olde city had to offer.

  • Pros: Great drinks and great date place for couples.

Best Tiramazu ever

by lslug

Very disappointed in the main entre. The two spoonfulls of soup were very good. Main entre was below average ( My wife got the Salmon that was well over cooked and barley combination added nothing to the dish but take up space. ) Lacked immagination, little or no flavor, very plain. I even forget what I ordered but it left no impression. If you are Quaker and like things plain, this is the place for you. Expected a lot more, an average seafood place. Desert was great, skip diner, go for the Tiramazu.
