I'd give it zero stars if I could...
by donnaw34
Whatever you do, do NOT go to this place to eat, drink, or be treated with any amount of common decency.
I'm not even sure how it ever got a positive rating at all (unless it has changed hands in the past few years). The sad truth is that I've actually gone here a couple of times (b/c of the location, mostly) and every time it's been the same story - bad food, poor service, horrible management. I guess I just kept giving them the benefit of the doubt and expecting that things HAD to get better, somehow. But no. Tonight, a Tuesday b/t 6:30-7:30 p.m., myself and 5 friends decided to grab some drinks, some happy hour half-priced wings and some chips/dip. The margaritas were too sweet, the dip tasted like melted Velveeta, and we were charged full-price for the wings. When we asked the manager ("Ben") why this had happened, he said "Sorry, there's nothing we can do about that." We thought he was joking, but he just walked away. Seriously? It's amazing that this place is still open. If you are craving Mexican and/or a good margarita, go to Distrito (UCity, pricey) or El Vez (Center City, moderately priced), or even the Mexican Post (Old City, affordable)...basically go anywhere BUT Mad Mex.
- Pros: location
- Cons: everything else
Disappointed and Still Hungry
by spoongirl
We visited Mad Mex with out of town family because they love Mexian food. My son, a toddler, was with us, so I checked on line to see if they had a kids' menu. Since the site said they did, we thought this would be a perfect place for us to visit. Once we sat down to order, I asked for the kids' menu and the server said they didn't have one. He got the manager, who said that even though I looked online, their branch didn't have a kids menu. Strike one. We figured out what to order my son and moved on. We all ordered our meals, and our server left. It took at least 40 minutes for us to get our food. Never once did our server come to assure us that the food was coming, even though he walked right past us. Strike two. When the food finally came out, it was terrible! Strike Three. I had the chicken tacos, which were burnt and had no flavor whatsoever. We were all eating spicy food, yet couldn't even get the waiter to stop at our table so we could get refils on our drinks. I finally stopped eating and decided that I'd eat something better at home. We left frustrated and disappointed. I will NOT return to this restaraunt , nor would I recommend it. The service and the food were definitely not what should be at a "4-star restaraunt", especially in the city.
Bad food, run by terrible people

I have never thought the food here was much good, and overall I think the only reason to go to Mad4Mex would be their cheap, strong margaritas. Nonetheless, I was put in charge of planning a work happy hour event, and many people wanted it to be at Mad4Mex. Fine. I called and had a long conversation with the manager about the fact that while the do not usually take reservations, in this case we had a large group who really wanted to have our even there, but the only way we could do that was to make a firm reservation. The manager says okay, we book the event. I even called a week before my event to make sure that everything was set, and was told that it was.
SO, my group arrives at the time of the reservation and we are told that a large group of people had just arrived, and that they could not honor my reservation. Suddenly, I am left with a large group of people (30) who had been told to meet for an event at Mad 4 Mex, and there's no place at all for us to sit. I spoke with the manager who had arranged my reservation, and he now denied that he had ever 'guaranteed' our reservation. This is a lie, but regardless I simply cannot believe the complete lack of respect for your customers that it takes to simply decide to ignore a reservation for a group of thirty without even calling me.
For what it's worth, we ended up frantically running next door to the White Dog Cafe, where they found a room for our group and gave us fantastic service and we had a brilliant time.
Moral of this story: If what you want is a cheap, very alcoholic margarita and some faux-Mexican food, have a blast. If what you want is a place where you can take a group of people, or have any sort of reservation that you can count on, this is not the place.
Horrible service!!

This was one of my worse experience especially dining in PA for the first time... The waitress had such a horrible attitude. On top of that, we could hardly find her when we needed her... Whenever we want to order additional items, she would have this nasty look on her face... I would never come back again.
- Pros: None
- Cons: Horrible Customer Service
Disgusting mexican food
by BV2009
I ordered a Madmex enchilada with shrimps. What came out was shrimp sandwiched in two tortillas with some cheese on top, which is not even an enchilada. the rice was very dried and undercooked. Food is disgusting.
- Cons: Disgusting food that is expensive
Come for the Margaritas not the Burritos
by m_raven415
Let's straight out and say it, this is NOT an authentic Mexican restaurant. Don't come here looking for an amazing burrito. This is however a favorite of Penn students' happy hour sport. Why you may ask? The answer is the the BIG AASS Margaritas. This giant size drink is enough to get you buzzed and stoned face. If not, then try another b/c they are that good. The wings are also fantastic. If you are in the area or want to find a place to go for happy hour, this is it. The only problem is that they get busied very quickly due to Penn students.
- Pros: the margaritas, wings, happy hour
- Cons: burritos
One of the weakest Mexican chains in Philly
by claytonjones
I had heard a lot of good things about Mad Mex for a while and finally stopped in to check it out. I'm sad to say it did not live up to the hype, especially since I live in West Philly and we could use a good Mexican joint like this. As others have pointed out, the food is not authentic, but that's not always a bad thing. Take the Joint/Salsalitos for example, far from authentic but very good. Max Mex unfortunately doesn't have that sort of quality. The guacamole was very tasty but for the extra cost was sparse in serving. The serving sizes in general, for the prices, weren't up to snuff. You can get a bigger, cheaper, and equally satisfying burrito at Qdoba or Sante Fe, and I'm not crazy about either of those places. I imagine if you're looking to get drunk and eat mediocre faux Mexican, Mad Mex is for you. For a decent meal at a good price, look elsewhere.
- Pros: Food and drinks are decent
- Cons: Overpiced, hot and stuffy inside, service was okay at best
intense margaritas
by lblazie
You definitely cannot beat the margarita special (4-6pm then again 10pm-12am). Food is so-so, but it's hard to go wrong with the quesadillas. It's defintiely a college crowd, so if you cannot deal with that, I would not recommend going (at least not for the happy hour.)
Margaritas
by alee34
I love the Mad Mex in Pittsburgh, and was excited to try the University City location. The space is much better in University City but the margaritas werent blended as well. Food was consistent with Pittsburgh (great queso dip). This is a great place for large groups, and you cant beat the happy hour specials.
- Pros: Specials, Good Appetizers
- Cons: Eh Service
