What happened?
by marathongrrl
I used to go to Genji all the time when I was a student and it was so so good. I just moved back to Philly and it was one of my first stops. What a difference and not in a good way. The fish was way too salty and didn't taste fresh at all. I don't think I'll be going back any time soon.
- Pros: reasonable price
- Cons: sushi not as good as I remember
Deteriorated

I totally agree on "Onece the best, now a disappointment" and "Totally overated". It was really disappointing for those who knew Genji was excellent around 2002...
Extremely Overrated!!!

We'd heard that Genji was good and there were a lot of people there when we got there, but it turned out to be a huge disappointment. Our salads were a plate of limp, browning lettuce that were way overpriced. We ordered a few rolls and none of them were particularly good. The spicy tuna was awful - when we told the waiter we didn't care for it, he explained they used a jalpeno based spicy sauce, not the type of sauce most places use. We didn't even eat it. The other rolls were blah and didn't really have any flavor. The soy sauce was so salty we couldn't even use it - the nori tasted too salty as well. The service was mediocre at best. I have eaten at about 6 other sushi restaurants in Philly and this is the worst yet. If you want really good, really fresh sushi - go to Kisso in Old City. I've been there over a dozen times and have never been disappointed.
- Pros: None
- Cons: Quality, Service
Not impressed...

I don't even know how Genji competes with the other sushi bars in center city. The sushi here is not fresh and the restaurant on the whole is not welcoming. I would much rather eat at Fuji and get the freshest fish at a reasonable price. Also their sake selection is very limited and generic.
- Cons: Bad fish, bad sake list, way too bright!!!!

- Pros: freshest sushi - best uni i ever tasted
- Cons: prices are higer than average
fresh and tasty
by kevala_
I like Genji. The rolls were tasty and the tofu was the most fresh and authentic I've had in a long time. I have just two complaints: 1) tables seem too close together, so if there's a loud person at a neighboring table you can't help but hear their entire conversation, and 2) the nori on some of my hosomaki rolls was much too damp. Despite other peoples' complaints, I found the service to be polite and attentive.
- Pros: good food, nice location, prompt seating
- Cons: terrible parking, noise level in dining room
Mid-day sanctuary from sooty Sansom Street--and some of the best sushi in town.
by Contributor
In Short
The Center City Genji is the sleeker, younger sister of the University City location. A line of unobtrusive chefs stands at attention and work their magic behind the spotless sushi bar near the door. On the other side of the bar, a quiet following of mostly business people stop by for a quick and light repast.
Best sushi in town
by dhk_potables
The sushi is incredible. Every piece perfect. Sea urchin my favorite, and don't forget the live scallops. Just delicious. Everytime I stop in for just a few pieces I end up not being able to leave. Every bite better than the last. As for bad service in the restaurant area I can't say anything, the sushi bar chefs are very nice.
- Pros: Fresh fish, Live scallops, Saki list
Once the best, now a disappointment
by preternatural1
This place used to have the best sushi in Philadelphia. Now, the sushi is so-so, makng it completely overpriced. In addition, the ambience is horrible and the service abominable. I don't know what happened, but I have been burned twice and won't ever go back.
- Pros: location
- Cons: rotten service, overpriced, no ambience
Too Much Attitude
by sockii
The best experience I've had here was just sitting at the sushi bar once with friends and feasting on great sushi. However, every experience I've had in the regular dining room has been less-than-memorable. The service is consistently bad and full of attitude. The waitstaff always makes me feel like they're doing me a huge favor to fill my order, and god forbid you have any questions or special requests! They always seem in a rush to get you out the door, particularly at lunch time (when they don't even offer the best thing on the menu: the green tea ice cream & fruit plate).
The prices are such that you really should get better treatment--and better food--for your money.
I would definitely choose Fuji Mountain instead.
- Pros: good sushi
- Cons: , expensive
