Good coffee, but breakfast pastries are unimpressive
by herrade
The coffee is exceptional (and its organic/fair trade), but be warned: This is not like an authentic French bakery. The croissants are heavy and sweet rather than light and buttery. Some people like it that way, but if you're used to real, French-style croissants, you'll feel like you ate a brick. The chocolate croissant was a disaster -- when I bit inside, I found not the lovely chocolate paste that fills a real pain au chocolat, but rather a small, hard chocolate lump. Seriously -- it was candy-bar hard. On top of everything, the service was a bit frigid, and the food seemed overpriced. A coffee and three croissant for $9? Hmmm.
Fresh baked bread so good it would make any carb counter reconsider.

In Short
With well-worn hardwood floors, the rustic look of this bakery will lead you to think people in the neighborhood have been coming here for generations. With over a dozen varieties of fresh baked bread delivered daily, you're bound to find the perfect complement to any meal-just be sure you don't eat the whole loaf on the way home. The Metropolitan Bakery also stocks specialty soups, sauces and pastas, many of which come from local vendors.
Sunday bread...
by Fashion_Guru
The chocolate cherry bread baked on Sundays is amazing, although I wouldn't consider it bread...more like a dessert, but WOW! Such cute pastries there, too.
