Try the Tofu Sukiyaki!

by alohaphiladelphia

I've been here three times. The vegetarian tofu sukiyaki is my favorite- it's one of the the most delicious dishes I've had in Philadelphia. Big thick-style mung noodles, veggies, tofu in a truly delicious hot broth. I've brought friends here for dinner before the Kimmel center, and always see at least two friends when I'm there. Attentive, knowledgeable staff - not pretentious. Warm, beautiful lighting. Cozy. My sushi-eating friends have always noted how good the place is, and if you don't like sushi, like me, there are wonderful other Japanese dishes!. You can count on this place for a good meal, warm atmosphere, good prices, with simple elegance.

  • Pros: Delicious flavors, friendly and warm staff
  • Cons: n/a

Ignore the absurd dismissal that precedes this review

by MFaccenda

Please try to minimize whatever credibility you lent to the previous review. Anyone who will publicly admit that their friendships are contingent upon a restaurant-recommendation is a pitiful product of modern cultural pretentiousness. This restaurant is NOT bad. I lived in Japan for 2 years and I've eaten lots of Sushi. I am not , therefore, an expert, but Shiroi Hana is a good value. It's unpretentious, has good service, and is worth a try. Unless you want to go out to eat with the previous reviewer, you'll probably enjoy your experience.

  • Pros: good value, NOT bad
  • Cons: Not exceptional

Good sushi at a reasonable price

by Iamafatty

What a deal! This place consistently has fantastic, fresh sushi at such a reasonable price. If you truly enjoy good sushi you should make this place a must visit. Their specialty rolls are unique and relatively well priced for Center City.

  • Pros: Quality of sushi, freshness, ability to get in on any given night
  • Cons: ambiance? who cares??

Best sushi

by marisadz

I've been to most of the sushi restaurants around the city, and this is still my favorite. I haven't found any other place that compares in terms of freshness, style, and combinations. They never disappoint. I haven't tried any of their regular entrees, but their appetizers are very good - I highly recommend the scallops appetizer.

  • Pros: Sushi!
  • Cons: nothing!

Frozen fish, are you kidding?

by bcohen66

I ate here recently on a recommendation, and man was this place terrible. Suffice to say, the person who made the recommendation is no longer a friend.

Shiroi Hana is serving all frozen fish that is clearly older than it should be, and defrosted and refrozen too many times. The fish is rubbery, slightly bitter, and mostly tasteless. The sushi had so much rice I could barely fit it in my mouth...

Really pathetic... i'm shocked this place is even in business... hasn't it made some sick at this point? I must say our server was friendly, but it looked like she even knew their sushi was trash... she could barely make a suggestion.

I won't be going back for sure.... if I want this kind of quality, I can get take out from the grocery store.

  • Pros: no waiting
  • Cons: horrible fish for eating, great for making a rubber ball with.

i'm not sure what standards everyone is using...

by nyc_expat

but this place is nothing special. the sushi is no better than your average storefront: fish is generally rubbery, not the melt-in-your-mouth-variety that should earn top ratings. i know that philly is starved for decently priced, high-quality sushi joints, but you're WAY better off at the new Miraku on Spruce and 13th or Moshi Moshi on 18th. the service here is efficient and friendly, i'll give it that.

  • Pros: attentive, friendly service; convenient location
  • Cons: sub-par sushi

Don't go here! Please!

by mixgirl

Please don't go here. The sushi here is better than Morimoto, Hikaru, Genji, Nara, Fuji Mountain, Aoi, and others. Yes, I love sushi and I don't want the likes of you or your boyfriend or girlfriend or family here because you will take away valuable seating space from me and the people I want to bring here, so please go to your inferior sushi place and eat the stuff you think is so awesome. Forget that what you get here is heaven on rice and there's something, a seafood item, on the menu here that is better than anything in its class anywhere in Philadelphia. But I won't tell you. You'll have to experiment and find it. Ha! You'll be eating and eating tons of great food until you get to it. Okay, I'll give you a hint. It's a crab. Now go away so I can enjoy the culinary delights here while you go on and on about your favorite sushi place!

Superior Japanese cuisine in a peaceful, contemporary environment.

by Contributor

In Short
The main dining room--contemporary in style with hardwood flooring and tasteful artwork--accommodates tables of two and four, with an eight-seat sushi bar for solo patrons. Service, while friendly, operates on a less-is-more philosophy. Although other Japanese spots garner more fanfare, Shiroi is undoubtedly upper-echelon. The tuna used for both the sushi and special maki is simply sublime; the spider roll is a treat crustacean fans will salivate over.
