Best BYO sushi in the City
by ny2000
INCREDIBLE! We try to get to Umai at least once a month. This place is small and basic. It is a new business. The decor is charming and low key. The servers are most knowledgable about the dishes served. THE FISH IS AMAZING> I agree with the previous reviewer who compared Umai Umai to Mori Moto. Great food, byob, decent prices. The only thing lacking is the tea. This surprizes me since attention to detail is everywhere else. Just a bag thrown in some water. Nothing fancy there. I wonder if you could BYOT? A great selection of teas would be great for those of us who don't drink alcohol. But GO! Go for the food!
So fresh as if the chef just came back from fishing.

I love this place! I'm so happy this establishment exist in my neighborhood. The sushi was fresh and for the first time, I understood what it meant when the sushi just melts in your mouth. The Toro was fantastic and the Tartar was just as great as the dishes I've had at Morimoto's. The specialty rolls were great as well, though I would have been fine with just the basic rolls. Our little high school reunion of 4 was pretty rowdy so I thank the restaurant for being so accommodating even though we must have been agitating our neighbor diners. Great BYOB for a small sushi joint. I highly recommend it and I think the prices are very reasonable for such great sushi. I would prefer coming here over Morimoto's any day.
- Cons: Kind of small and echos a lot. Maybe small is a good thing so they can keep their service and food up to great standards.
My favortie sushi place in town

In my personal opinon, the sushi at this place is comparable to Morimoto but at half the price, byo, and with a friendly chef and waitstaff. I highly recommend it.
Wonderful Neighborhood Addition
by shaymikkiphilly
We are becoming regulars at this fantastic addition to the Spring Garden/Art Museum/Fairmount neighborhood. Cozy and delicious, we keep coming back for more! The chef has a wonderful sushi menu, and also has creative hot entrees. He changes the menu up frequently and always has super-fresh ingredients. Remember to BYO sake or wine, and things get pretty busy on Fridays and Saturdays.
