Ok....
by funkyme72
Went there on a Saurday night and the place was packed? The drinks weren't bad, and the food wasn't the BEST but our company made up for it. I don't think I would go back due to the fact that it didn't leave a last impression.
- Pros: Diverse crowd
- Cons: Parking
mexican food
by mimi610
so..... you want mexican, good food, great service, affordable prices, somewhere you want to come back to again and again....... Cantina Los Caballitos is not your place. The hostess threw down our menus, our waitress took forever and a siesta for our drinks. plus she forgot what we ordered. Trek all across town to go here .... never. The food was a major letdown. Black-beans in a blender do not make a sauce. Go here - even if it were on my corner... never. I had such high expectations. I am dissapointed.
If you want GOOD mexican food, head to Lolita. But not on the night I am going- I want a table.
- Pros: good spot in the middle of nowhere
- Cons: everything food and beverage related
Awesome Breakfast Burrito

My girlfriend and I had brunch at the Cantina a couple of weeks ago and we couldn't have been happier. The food was great, the coffee was good, and the service was really nice. We were seated right away. They played music that I like. I mean, what's not to like? You'd have to be a total fun-hater not to like this place.
- Pros: Yummy Food Nice Music
- Cons: I don't live closer to it
Excellent brunch. Tasty drinks. Good atmosphere.

After a fairly rough night of celebration, several friends and I were looking for some brunch to soothe our hangovers and get us moving on a sunny Sunday afternoon. A friend recommended we meet her at the Cantina. We had an unwieldy party of seven, but we were seated promptly.
The salsa was very fresh and tomato-y. The tomatillo salsa was a nice change of pace. Everyone seemed to love their food. My burrito was spectacular as was my Bloody Maria. All the dishes were reasonably priced as well.
As I had such a nice time, I just wanted to speculate a bit. The three reviews prior to my own are all one star and were all written on the same day. Does that seem terribly likely? It seems like someone had a bad time here or has it in for the restaurant or one of its employees. The writing style is all fairly similar as well. Trying to bring the rating down, perhaps? I think you and your fiancee/boyfriend/fiancee need to lighten up.
- Pros: food, atmosphere, drinks, and a really nice bathroom!
- Cons: service just slightly flaky, a little too much mixer to booze ratio on the drinks
Nice Bar, Bad food

I have passed by Los Caballitos several times, and it looked like a great Mexican restuarant. My boyfriend and I walked through the door, and we were very happy with the atmosphere and the people working there were friendly. We sat down and were served cold tortilla chips that propbably came from a bag. We were served a red salsa and a green salsa that tasted the same. It was like nothing I had ever tasted in a Mexican restuarant. There wasn't much to choose from the menu. My favorite spanish meal is enchiladas, and they were not on the menu. My second choice would have been Chimichangas, and they were not on the menu either. If they want to keep customers coming back they are going to have to add more things to the menu. They are trying to put a twist to authentic mexican dishes, but it is not working. Another disappointment was that rice and beans did not come with your meal. Everything was ala-carte. I ordered spanish rice and it wasn't good at all, I only took one bite. It was really that bad. I hope they improve their menu because I do like the atmosphere, but the food was horrible.
- Pros: Atmosphere, service
- Cons: Food!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not what I expected

I went to Los Caballitos for the first time on Thursday, October 11th. I was very disappointed with the food and somewhat disappointed with the service. My fiance, myself and her daughter were seated and it was chilly enough in the restaurant that we couldn't even remove our jackets. We were given lunch menus which were only good until 5pm and we arrived at 5:45 pm. We were given a small plate of tortilla chips which were cold and not nearly enough for three people. When we were finally given the regular dinner menus we were all very disappointed in the limited selection. We all settled for something that we would not have even considered at any other mexican restaurants we had been to in the past. The dinners were all a la carte and we were used to rice and beans or other sides being included with the meal. The prices were more than we have paid at any other mexican restaurants we have been to, and I'm not talking about fast food mexican. I ordered the crispy tilapia tacos, and they were not good at all. I had refried beans as a side dish and I was disappointed in them also. We are not big alcohol drinkers so I can't speak about the margaritas. Overall I was very disappointed with the meal and the service was average at best. Needless to say I would not reccommend this restaurant to anyone, in fact I would reccommend to anyone that they not even waste there time in this establishment.
- Pros: service was average
- Cons: food, price, parking
big disappointment

I had passed by this resturant several times and told my fiance we should try it out. I love mexican food and have been searching for a great mexican resturant. When we finally went we found the atmosphere very charming, however, the so called "Mexican" food was not. The menu was very limited and we felt we had to settle for what we would have never chosen at another mexican resturant. When we did get our food it was not even close to any other mexican resturant we've eaten at in the past. It was also the only mexican resturant I've ever eaten at that was ala carte. We found it to be pricey for what we got and the food didn't seem to be of good quality. I had spanish rice and it was so bland I couldn't finish it. Needless to say I would not recommend Los Caballitos as a good choice for a mexican resturant. If you only want drinks and an appetizer you might be okay.
- Pros: Ambience,service
- Cons: Food,price,quality
i heart the Cantina

The Cantina Los Caballitos is one of the best new(ish) additions to Passyunk East. The food is absolutely fantastic and the "appetizers" are large enough to feed two people and leave you stuffed. The staff is always friendly (albeit occasionally forgetful), but they're all gorgeous to look at, so who cares? Some of my favorites--the empanadas, especially the beef with oaxaca cheese. The goat burrito is to die for, and the pork tacos are fantastic. For a yummy little side treat, try the garlic shrimp. The shrimp are huge, the garlic sauce is incredible and the little chunks of roasted garlic are nothing to sneeze at.
And the price is great--2 entrees, 3 drinks, and 2 cups of coffee was only $44.
They're my new favorite hangover cure--a mojito and a cup of coffee.
They're a little stingy on the guac though.
- Pros: awesome food, huge poritions, low prices
- Cons: where's my damn guacamole???
addicting

their interpretation of Mexican is rather loose but what they come up with is fun, tastey and they?ve earned their creative license. (and, um, yeah. Mexican restaurants should always give you chips and salsa when you sit down. folks that seem surprised by this, well . . . ?????)
The atmosphere is very romantic in an indy let?s drink one too many negro modelos kind of way. It?s fun when packed with local hipsters, confused when neighborhood south philly ruffians find their way to watch a game. Luckily they don?t stay because no one gives them positive reinforcement for shouting at the tv.
The juke box is excellent ?yes, a real juke box- which means that bad music choices can?t be made by random patrons with no taste in music.
You see, that?s really the genius of a real juke box rather than those ?internet? box things.
Oh, and the servers are hawt, in the bike messenger genre.
- Pros: prickly pear margaritas, just for fun
- Cons: crowded
I don't get it
by tmanhan
I understand there are few options in South Philly, but this place was horrible. The service was rude and inept, the margaritas were rather pricey considering they used tequila that tasted like rubbing alcohol and sour mix instead of fresh juice, and the food was bland, boring, and served cold. I ended up eating half my entree and then filling up at the taqueria across the street, which I highly recommend.
