Good food, marginal service, ethically challenged
by Contratenor
Nice selection of well prepared meals. The meal itself was served in good time, but additions to the original order were far too slow. I was charged more than what I signed for on my card. Was in a group of three and I charged my portion of the tab, including tip. It seems that a gratuity was added even though the waitress received over twenty percent on the entire ticket. We'll see what the manager says about this.
- Pros: Well prepared food and fair prices
- Cons: Slow service and an attitude of entitlement
1601- great bar, great food, great fun -- and civic-minded too!

My first experience with "1601" was Saturday, December 9, 2006 when manager Dave and his staff hosted the East Passyunk Avenue (EPX) Civic Association after its 10th Street cleanup event - fellow EPX-ers swept and polished 10th Street from Tasker to Snyder.
Dave greeted us EPX-ers and happily posed for photos with our group. We were tired, dirty and cold, and Dave provided us with a place to rest, relax, nosh on bagels and schmeer, and chat with our fellow South Philly neighbors. Some stayed for lunch, including myself and was I glad I did. I order the butternut squash risotto and it was fabulous! Please check out "1601" -- fun and friendly, neighborhood bar/restaurant!
- Pros: Cozy, neighborhood bar with fabulous food
- Cons: Parking might be an issue but hey, it's South Philly!
best bar u don't know about

i went to this place for the first time last weekend and wondered how i've gone this long without it...the food was amazing and way affordable.(unlike a certain new neighborhood spot i had been frequenting)...the staff was young and layed back without being neglectful of the customers. the beer selection was great, the music was good and they have a 42' plasma tv....i found a new favorite bar
- Pros: great food and service
- Cons: no smoking
Beer Monster Like! Beer Monster Love!
by beermonster
Surprisingly smart and thoughtful beer selection. Three Philosophers on tap, tall bottles of Rodenbach, and a seven malt scottish ale made in the US(did I mention it comes in a can!). I had a barley wine smooth and creamy as a stout with double the taste and triple the alcohol! One basket of their specialty white truffle and locateli frites emerged from the their kitchen, and had everyone's mouth watering. Accompanied by a creamy horseraddish dipping sauce they tasted even better than they smelled. Comfortable inviting atmosphere, friendly and knowledgeable staff. The best thing happening for South Philly Gastro-pubs right now.
- Pros: Top quality. Low price. Great people
- Cons: parking(take a cab)
Horrible Customer Service
by bsmithb
Probably one of the worst experiences that I have ever had a restaurant/ bar. The bar "manager" was rude and very arrogant. My wife's food was over cooked and the taste was not at all there. I would avoid this cafe if you are looking for a nice night out on the town. The cafe is all in all a dressed up dive bar with nothing new to offer.
- Cons: Bad attitude from servers and questionable characters hanging out
Most affordable with an amazing atmosphere!

1601 is a true treasure. Hidden on the corner of 10tha nd Tasker in South Philadelphis, you will find that the service is great athe food is even better and the price is less than expected. Most def. one of my favorite spots in the city!
- Pros: way affordable
- Cons: parking can be tough
Great late-night hang out spot
by fancylad
The staff was amazing as well as the people that showed up on the night that I went. This place has a great vibe to it that's impossible to fake. I'll definately be going back next weekend.
- Pros: The people, the staff, the drink selection
- Cons: Crowded
This South Philly trendsetter stands out as a hip enclave deep in the heart of the 'hood.

In Short
Once upon time in South Philly immigrants flocked her from Italy and Eastern Europe. Today, refugees from Center City come seeking affordable digs and bumped up square footage. Enter 1601, a hip and modern space that feels more like Northern Liberties than points south. Come for the post-modern bar menu (Moroccan Burrito anyone?), sophisticated beer list (Troegs, Flying Fish, Dog Fish Head) and well-considered, affordable wines. Great tunes, a convivial vibe and friendly staffers add to the mix.
