Great Experience! Try the 5 Course Tasting Experience!
by cronin
We probably go out to eat restaurant twice a month. I really enjoy going to neighborhood byobs. However I had recently gone to another in that area and wasn't thrilled. So I was a little nervous. I was pleastly surprised with Salt and Pepper. Salt and Pepper has a fabulous environment and great selection on the menu. We went with another couple and did the 5 course tasting experience. They ask you if you have any food preferences or allergies and whip you up 5 courses. It was truly amazing.
I highly recommend Salt and Pepper and I definitely recommend the Course Tastings!
Great Evening!
- Pros: Atmosphere perfect for a romantic date or a small gathering! Food!
- Cons: Mmmm, not sure. I think if you needed more menu options (or a kid friendly dish) they'd create you something.
Queen's Village's best BYOB
by Kcphila
This place is great, the food, the atmosphere, the service- all around excellent BYOB. Philly's swamped with great BOYBs but Salt & Pepper definitely makes the pick.
- Pros: Service, food, atmosphere
- Cons: Sitting outside can be a little noisy
a great experience everytime

Friday Night -- Summer
by thom_kriner
This BYOB is very personable, excellent cuisine and casual atmosphere. Had the "tapas" appetizer: eggplant was savory, hummus was creamy, octopus was tender.
For the main entree, it was a perfectly prepared salmon with a coconut-based sauce: light and complimentary. The rice with almonds were a little dry, but tasty!
The chocolate mousse was a perfect ending -- light, creamy and just the right amount of chocolate.
And, to top it off -- the regulars made the evening! The "Calle 54" recommendation made the weekend even that much happier -- thanks : - )
- Pros: Neighbors, food, ambience
Great BYO
by squachy
I love this place. They recently stopped doing brunch, which is a shame, but their dinners are still very good. It feels like you're part of the family when you're at Salt and Pepper. Recently I had a really good fish dish for dinner, and before that I remember loving a chicken entree they had. I guess a downfall of their menu is that it usually isn't very vegetarian friendly, but what they do make, they make well. Be sure to make reservations, as this restaurant only has a few tables and they have been filled when I've gone on weekends.
- Pros: BYOB, fresh food, open kitchen
- Cons: only one chef, so you may wait for your food
Disappointed
by aaffss
I was very excited to try this restaurant and am a huge fan of the byobs. We went around 7:30 on a Friday night and had our choice of tables. The appitizers took quite a while and not really worth the wait. The salad was just mostly the weedy kind of lettuce with a lots of orange slices on top. The scallops were fine. Then, it took about an hour longer to get our main meals- even though it was not busy. We were starving and had to ask for more bread. They were out of the dessert we wanted. The service was alright. Overall, not a great experience.
- Pros: byob. steak
- Cons: service
Great Fish & Fun
by Jan77
I have been to Salt & Pepper a few times now, each time with friends from the neighborhood. The food is consistently great and we have always ended up making a night of it with someone running home to grab another bottle of wine. I would highly recommend the restaurant. The seafood is fresh and tasty and the chef is wonderful about inventing special dishes upon request.
Wow! First bad BYOB experience in years!
by magabondu
We have eaten at so many great philly restaurants that we had forgotten what a bad restaurant can be like! To make a long story short, I had a really tough porkchop served in what was similar to a brown microwave-dinner gravy and my girlfriend had a really bad piece of fish served on top of some lentils that we both thought were delicious...but lentils do not a good dinner make.
To make matters worse it took the 20 minutes to bring the bread and then (literally) 30 seconds later they slapped the appetizers in front of us. Then we waited an excruciating 50 minutes for our main course! With so many great restaurants in the city (and in bella vista) I wouldn't waste much time on this one.
- Pros: Small BYOB on a nice street.
- Cons: Average Food
Vegetarians accomidated!
by tulipwalk
We're vegetarians and we like to try new places (especially when they've stop serving foie gras:-). We didn't think S & P would have anything to offer us but we were told that the chef would whip us up anything we wanted (even dishes that weren't on the menu!). That was very accomidating of the Chef to offer but we decided to try one of their choice salads and Butternut Squash soup. It was amazing, we were very pleased and will recommend to others. The atmosphere is cozy and the staff was absolutely delightful. Thank you Salt & Pepper.
- Pros: excellent service
- Cons: decor could use a wee bit more attention
Execution isn?t up to aspirations
by phillycmc
This tiny restaurant aspires to join the ranks of places like Pumpkin and the larger Mattyson. Perhaps it?s that the kitchen is so small that only one person can work in it, that it just doesn?t live up to the possibilities expressed in the menu descriptions. Began with the mussels special, which was OK. The tomato was fresh and broth had an interesting basil flavor, but the chorizo was a big disappointment ? we thought it was spicy kielbasa! One entree was the crispy chicken, and to their credit, the skin was terrifically crispy. Otherwise, it was boring. The sauce served with it helped. The vegetables accompany it were in serious need of help. The mashed potatoes were watery (yuck!) and the broccolinni lacked flavor. The other entree was the salmon, which was a good piece of fish and was well cooked, if a little underwhelming in taste. The sides here were a disappointment too, with the broccolinni joining something else I can?t even remember now, the day after.
The biggest disappointment was the decor. It?s just dreadful. Repaint the celery green walls black and white (after all, it's SALT and PEPPER - black and white - get it?!?!), install an antique mirror, add some interesting and well placed lights, along with lots of tea candles, and the tiny place could be intimate and lively. Now, it feels like I?m sitting in someone?s basement.
- Pros: BYOB, take reservations and credit cards
- Cons: ugly decor, so-so food
