Stop..Don't do it!

by phillygurl75

Well it took about 20 minutes for the bartender to come over and give me and my friend a drink and when he did he didn't even ask us if we wanted to see a menu. I am very disappointed in this place, we were looking for a new hangout. 2 THUMBS DOWN

  • Pros: There are no pros
  • Cons: This place is a dungeon and I been to few crappy bars

The worst dining experience of my life

by isladelsol

Of the hundrers of offerings during Beer Week we decided to try Grace Tavern w/out of town guests. What a mistake. Neither the bar or dining area were crowded but we were unable to order a beer. Not an unreasonable expectation in a bar during Beer Week. The waiter initially ignored us then verbally attacked us & demanded that we apologize because we had tried to get his attention. It was so absurd that initially we thought he was joking, then he continued his demeaning rant until we left to spend our money elsewhere. Our sandwiches were served on rolls that were charred & blackened from the broiler. Why?? Food should never leave the kitchen looking that way. Philadelphia has so many wonderful pubs there is no need to go to Grace Tavern.

  • Cons: Arrogant waiter, sub par food

You gotta have the beans!

by sleepyhead1

I loved this place and will be going back! It's hard to get a seat either at a table or the bar because there simply aren't enough of them, but while you're waiting for something to open up you can enjoy some great beer. We had the fries, blackened green beans and jambalaya and they were all outstanding - even the fries! The blackened green beans are addictive and the jambalaya has great flavor and just the right amount of heat. Don't let any of the negative reviews stop you from trying this place. Don't get it wrong - it's a bar, bar and it's far from swanky and trendy, but if you go in with that in mind you will not be disappointed! Oh, and the staff was great - no one rude, nasty or blind to an empty pint glass! Enjoy!

  • Pros: blackened green beans
  • Cons: small

skip this fake dive tavern

by Clamman65

I heard about this new pub on Philly dot com and wanted to try it out. My wife and I could not have been more disapointed. It was a Saturday night around 7pm and the place was not too busy. I stood by the bar for a few minutes and caught the bartenders attention after a 5 minute wait. He said to hang on a minute. He then proceeded to hang out with aquintences for another 5 minutes, and when he came back he poured other peoples drinks and ignored us completely. We decided not to stay for the drink or dinner. I do not mind waiting for a table for dinner, but I do not care to wait 15 minutes for a beer at an un-crowded dive bar. Maybe the food is good; I will never find out. Much better choices in the area for food and drink in my opinion.

My second favorite bar

by Kcphila

Really great bar, if it wasn't for my deep abiding love of Sidecar this'd be my top.

Really amazing selection of beer, but still some cheapees for the thrifty (2.25 PBR pounders).

A cool staff that warm up to regulars.

Very genuine decor. Great music. AMAZING food. Really a great place in the GHA.

I'd strongly suggest avoiding it on weekends however, it's usually a mad house. The middle of the week is a pretty good time to go.

  • Pros: great beer selection for all budgets, cool staff, great music
  • Cons: gets really full on the weekends

Subpar food, poor seating

by valerie28

My boyfriend and I have been to most of the pubs in Philly, and we tried this one for the first time last night --it fell far below the mark. The menu looked good on paper, but the reality was quite unpleasant. The green beans were hard--not juicy--and they were salty and charred-tasting. (The ones at White Dog are delicious!) The dipping sauce they came with was entirely flavorless--we couldn't even tell what it was.

The sausage sandwiches consisted of good sausage, a good roll, one flimsy piece of lettuce, and about a gallon of spicy mustard. There was so much mustard that you couldn't even taste anything else.

The side salad of baby greens was fresh and generous, but the dressing on it was completely flavorless... it might as well have been water.

We had tried to go once before, but every square inch of space was packed with people, so we couldn't get in. Some outdoor seating would improve the place immensely. Even Monday night when it was relatively empty, it was still VERY loud in there. The tables are so close together that you can hear every word from your neighbors three tables away. It was very chilly--I can overlook that as a fluke--but the restaurant is also always bizarrely dark, to the point where it's hard to read your menu.

We decided it wasn't worth ever going there again.

And that was halfway through our meal.

And that was before we dashed out, jumping up and down to warm ourselves because we were chilled to the bone.

Unfortunately, it was just not good : (

  • Pros: convenient location, reasonable prices
  • Cons: bad food, noisy, not enough space, dark

Not so Nice

by grammarscorpion

I always hear about how terrific this bar is, but when I went the bartender was really barky and rude, and the fries are way too salty for my taste.

  • Pros: Aesthetically Pleasing
  • Cons: Mean Service

Great neighborhood bar

by marisadz

Their food menu is small, but everything on it is done well (especially the fries with the Monk's dipping sauce). They have a very nice selection of beer for reasonable prices with good seasonal choices on tap. The bartenders are knowledgeable and will always give good suggestions if you want to try something different or new.
