just go and try.

by dax55

after practicing there for over a year i have realized that what's happening at Practice Yoga is just amazing. this is the studio to go to if your interest is in learning HOW to practice yoga, and not just to do yoga. ellen teaches her classes in the vinyasa style with a strong emphasis on safety and correct body alignment. the quiet , unassuming studio is very welcoming to students of all levels. a warming aspect of the studio is how personal it is, how ellen seems to know every student on a first name basis and how most of the students know each other quite well. this points to how much of a fixture the studio has become in the community, and how her students have become dedicated to the type of teaching and practice that is occurring.

  • Pros: expert instruction, warm atmosphere

Phila Yoga

by philatravelgirl

I have been a student at Practice Yoga since it opened 6 years ago. Having tried many other studios throughout the City, I always return and settle into Practice Yoga because of the consistency and level of knowledge of the teachers and the comfort (and location) of the studio itself. This is a "no frills" yoga studio, where the focus is on teaching proper alignment and the emphasis is on reaching personal goals. All classes and teachers are highly recommended.

  • Pros: high level of knowledge and expertise of all instructors; warm and quiet atmosphere

Good Iyengar Yoga

by aquaster

i taken yoga at a lot of places around the city. practice yoga is not my favorite. the teachers, however, are very knowledgable. my sense is that this is good studio if you are firmly rooted in the iyengar tradition.

  • Pros: teachers knowledgable in iyengar tradition, alignment.
  • Cons: my experience was that the classes were more heavily iyengar than the other styles that the studio claims to be

Yoga, straight up

by annibanani

I can't say that I've been necessarily consistent in my yoga practice over the years, but I have been picky. My first experience was phenomenal and I expect the same level of care and knowledge from my current instructors that I received from my first one. That said, I've tried lots of studios and gyms in the Philly area and never been as happy after a good class as I am after each class at PYS. The instructors are warm, supportive, and challenging as needed; the environment is perfect (calm, inviting, low key), and classes leave you feeling both energized and relaxed. Major bonus: the other students are generally great people, there's no sense of competition or condescension, which makes doing your own practice A LOT easier!

  • Pros: great instructors and atmosphere
  • Cons: occasional street noise (can't be avoided in the city!)

Basic, vinyasa and ashtanga yoga classes are taught one-on-one or in groups. Prenatal classes also are available.

great pre-natal yoga!

by oldecitybird

... the title says it all; some other studios in the city may offer this but they tend to be astronomical in price! Practice Yoga is affordable, in a cosy atmosphere with all equipment provided free of charge and with a very intuitive and knowledgeable teacher.

  • Pros: inexpensive, convenient location, great instructor

A little gem for those "in the know."

by meyerov

I've been a regular at this "speakeasy" studio for 3 years. I've also practiced at Wake Up, Yoga on Main, the Sporting Club and with Joan White. PYS is the best for many reasons. Mostly, because it's all about the practice of yoga without any bs but also because no one takes themselves too seriously here. Also, the best instructors (many folks study with Joan White and travel to workshops); the best value ($12 drop in, ($10 students), $10 per 1.5 hr class with a 10-class card, as opposed to $15-20 at Yoga Child!); small but dynamic classes; and an open door policy even if you are 5 min late.

  • Pros: Sunny, Effective
  • Cons: Location

We have taken class with most of the instructors at Practice Yoga and have found them to be excellent especially Ellen and Miko. The facility is clean, comfortable and attractive.
