After reading the other 2 reviews I was skeptical about going when my Aunt suggested it for dinner with the family. The restaurant isn't that big, and extremely casual, the usual eatin or take out spot , It was five of us so they pushed two tables together. Like I said we had dinner, entrees, we decided against the buffet just because after reading the menu we wanted to try the entrees. The food was delicious, I had the brown stewed chicken, rice and beans, and fried plantains. My family had everything from the Grilled Tilapia to the Lamb w/ Spinach Sauce. All was absolutely delicious and the Candied Yams were soooo good. Our waitress was very charming. There were options for drinks, like ginger beer some juices and some other drinks (maybe african). I don't recall seeing any listings of alcoholic drinks but with all the different spices, the unlimited water pitcher they serve is a necessity . I will definitely go again, either eat in or take out ...

  • Pros: Good Food Relatively Fast, and Good Value
  • Cons: Ambience needs improvement

In Short
Fatou's soul food and Caribbean cuisine--barbecue chicken, spicy jerk chicken and tender curried goat--are as good as any in the city. Try pastels, crisp pockets of dough filled with spicy fish or beef. Definitely order a side of fried plantains. Chebujen, Senegal's national dish, is a savory, daily stew of mackerel and herbs on couscous. Don't miss maafe, peanut butter-dressed chicken or lamb, or the tasty, onion and lemon-infused yassa chicken or shrimp.

While the buffet is a good way to introduce yourself to the food at Fatou and Fama, I recommend ordering an entree from the menu. The food is great and this is truly a great unique place to dine! Staff is very friendly as well.

I am an expert of good eating. I only eat at the BEST TASTING restaurants around. Trust me, Fautou & Fama's is more that a delight. The food is excellent, whether eating the fish, lamb, or chicken dishes. Fautou is a master of African Senegalese cooking and more. Warm place and friendly service. When you know good tasting and well prepared food, you should visit Fatou & Fama's. You'll go again and again. I've have. Wishes of continued success Fatou & Fama's. Thank you for GOOOOD food.

  • Pros: well prepared food, good variety menu, the best plantains

I love ethnic cuisines in general, and I was hoping to love this place, but it just didn't turn out that way. The first two times I went, I had the buffet, which wasn't exciting or fancy, but it was satisfying, basic, home-style food. The last time I went, I ordered the "Senegalese national dish" (fish and vegetables over couscous with a red sauce) which, I'm sorry to say, I found inedible, despite my love of new tastes. My companion's lamb and cassava "couscous" dish was delicious, though -- savory, a little smoky, rich but not fatty. And the ginger juice was yummy. On all visits the service was adequate, but each time there was at least one thing we wanted that they were out of. The buffet is a decent value, but my fish would have been a moderate value at best even if it had been good ($12).

  • Pros: Interesting dishes
  • Cons: , not a good value, unavailable dishes

Had high hopes. The night we went, they did not have two out of four of the appetizers, and at least two of the entrees. I had the national dish of Senegal, a strong tasting fish in a tomatoey base. Average. The lamb was pretty tasty. They had a strange tasting casabah couscous with the lamb that I would not recommend. Service not great. Their credit card machine ran out of paper and they did not tell us until we were trying to pay the bill. It has potential, but they need to get their act together. We opted out of the buffet because it was a very small selection of soul food.

  • Pros: Lamb
  • Cons: Crowded, No atmosphere, Disorganized

If you don't mind deboning your own very tender and delicious fish & bringing your own sixpack, this place is fantastic. The food is simple but delicious and very reasonably priced. Also to the editors: Pastels (Pastéis) are originally Portuguese. This tasty dish has been interpreted in every Atlantic coast country they touched in their seafaring heyday, and Fatou & Fama does as nice a job with them as any I've had.

  • Pros: Low price, Food delicious, No nonsense
  • Cons: Service is spotty, Only water to drink
