One of the very best art museums in North America
by phillybud
World class museum. Superb collection: not only fantastic examples of European and American art, but something for everyone. Across the street is the new Perelman wing of contemporary art. A short walk down Franklin Parkway is the Rodin Mueum (part of the Philadelphia Museum of Art). A Japanese Buddhist temple was taken apart and reassembled here. The galleries of seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth century American furniture, silver, pottery, glassware, etc is unsurpassed. Although not quite as great as New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, I believe the Philadelphia museum surpasses easily the art museums of Chicago, Boston, Atlanta or Houston.
- Pros: Outstanding and distinguished art collection in a grand, majestic setting
- Cons: parking very difficult (come here by bus, trolley, or taxi)
From a 16th-century Indian temple to an impressive Marcel Duchamp collection, an encyclopedic force to be reckoned with.

In Short
Born in the age of the grand museum, the neoclassical temple on a hill stands high above the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, at a haughty distance from the bustle of Center City. It has earned an increasingly prominent place on the world-arts stage by putting together important shows, like the Cezanne exhibit (in the 1990s) and a tightly focused Goya show. Other memorable projects have projected the critical spotlight on Japanese design and self-taught artists.
Should be the best

The Philadelphia Museum of Art should be at the top of this list. I grew up right outside of Philly in the Suburbs and now live in Chandler, AZ. The first thing I do when I visit my hometown is go to the Art Museum. Not only is the architecture beautiful, there are people from all around the world, the art is fantastic, the food superb and very well priced in the upper dining room (service is phenomenal)-just dress nice, and the view..impecable. So, why don't you make it number 1? Thanks.
- Pros: Free on Sundays, Great gift shop, Fantastic Art
- Cons: Parking, Volunteer help poor
Surprisingly Good Collection

I have always been impressed with the art collection here. While it's not th eMEt, it definitely competes with other museums I have seen in Chicago, Toronto, and DC. The building itself is beautiful and the location couldn;t be more perfect for an Art Museum. also, Wed and Fri nights are great for dates. they bring in a wide variety of musical acts as well as show movies, give tours and lectures. You can also walk around and look at the collections after an overpriced glass of wine.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is an amazing experience that everyone can enjoy. Filled with beautiful examples of art from all genres including historical notes, descriptions of the style and techniques and even comments on the historical significant of the work and or it's artist. The museum itself is a beautiful work of art. The staff keeps the facility looking good and functioning properly and is always eager to help. If Philadelphia is your destination, the Philadelphia Museum of Art is a must see.
- Pros: A Great Collection, Great Facility
YO! Deres more den just cheese steaks to

I dont know much about art, but I know what I like and I like the art museum.
In fact, the arts bring more money into the local economy then the eagles and the phillies combined. Imagine what $500,000,000. 00 could do for the local art scene!
Next time the greedy sports franchises threaten to leave we should just give them some chamber of commerce material from outstanding cities such as, say little rock, AK or Sioux City South Dakota, telling them not to let the door hit them on the ass on their way out!

the art museum is for everybody. anybody can find something to explore and enjoy there. if they can't they haven't tried that hard. feeding your creative self takes some little bit of effort but at the art museum there is such an incredible variety.
- Pros: interesting, variety, fun exhibits
- Cons: disabled accesiblity, bigger discriptions, restrooms
Attractive
by heather6901
I think it's the entire setting of the Art Museum, the location, off the drive and all, which seals the attraction for the museum. The ability it has to capture everything as far as the city goes, example when you stand at the top of the stairs or stand below by the fountain. The building itself has an essence and presence. It's just very attractive.
- Pros: inexpensive on Sunday, beautiful location, view
- Cons: expensive food
Tops in the city

Though I've moved away from the city, I still long for this museum. It houses a particularily excellent collection of modern and abstract impressionistic work, along with works from a wide variety of other periods (there's lots of famous impressionist paintings). Among its best features are the entire rooms devoted to the art and lifestyle of other cultures, such as the Japanese tea house and garden area and the Chinese palace hall. Slipping into one of those rooms transports you to another time and place.
