What Our Expert Scouts Say

Marra's Restaurant

The single calzone is an entire pie of pizza folded in half so don't even try to order one for yourself. Good eating.

You may have to wait on a busy night, but it is worth it. The calzones are delicious and easily enough for three people.

Tips for Marra's Restaurant

September 18, 2012

Marra's is the Italian restaurant your parents would love, and they probably already do. An institution on Passyunk Ave, Marra's is known for traditional Italian dining. It's an ideal spot for getting together your whole clan, breaking open a bottle of wine, and going into a pasta coma.

Best Restaurant Ever!. I can't believe what I'm reading. I love Marra's! I live in Southwest Florida now and Marra's is my #1 destination when I get to Philly. In May, I drove from the airport directly to Marra's even before checking in my hotel. The manicotti is so delicious, it's like eating dessert for your meal. The Sarcone's bread is heaven and a perfect compliment to every meal. marra's antipasta is a favorite as is the grilled chicken sandwich with spinach and provolone cheese. It is always crowded and always noisey..welcome to an old school South Philly restaurant. I've always enjoyed the service. If you accept that the ambiance is less than glamorous and it's almost always noisy, than you will have some of the best food in the country.

MARRA'S - DON'T GO!. I have heard so many goods things about this restaurant as I have lived in Philly all my life. What a disappointment! Let me first say I have given this place more that one chance to meet it's reputation. Shame on me!

I went to dinner recently and was sat in the dining room to the left of the front door, which was filled with screaming kids. I understand its not Marra's responsibility, but there were plenty of over empty tables in a quieter area. The waitress forgot one of our two appetizers. Never even realized she did. Our dinners came out minutes after the appetizer. Our entrees were bland and lukewarm and presented extremely poorly, like the "red sauce" had just been thrown on the plate. ZERO flavor!!! I come from an italian family and this food is AWFUL. Not to mention everyone working there has a scowl on there face most of the time. At the end of our meal, our waitress asked if she could wrap my dinner. I said yes and of course she threw it out b/c she forgot. Just like she forgot out appetizer. WORSE PLACE EVER.

Terrible telephone service. The man who usually answers the phone is NEVER in a good mood and is always nasty. I will NEVER call or go there again! I have had it!

I had the misfortune of eating here. I'm sure this was a good restaurant at one time. I cannot imagine how they kept a good reputation though.

Italian food is supposed to be flavorful. I was stunned at the blandness. I could not make tomato sauce bland if I tried. It was very disappointing. Also, how do you serve mediocre bread in South Philly?????

The service was bad. Our waitress handed at least four of our dinners to the person closest to her and left it to us to pass plates around until it got to the right person. Why not, instead, take two steps and place the plate in front of the person who ordered it?

Is the service bad when the waitress does not return to ask you if everything is OK?

Is the service bad if the waitress cannot remember who ordered what?

I won't go there again. I can get better food and service for half the money at my local pizza shop.

Finally it is beyond me how people think this place gives large portions.

At least my pasta wasn't overcooked. That's about the only good thing I can say.

Don't Bother. Where do I begin? I remember eating at Marra's as a child and through my high school years. So they came to mind one night when I wanted some pizza delivery. BIG MISTAKE!! Not only did I wait an hour and 15 minutes for my pizza, when I called to check the status, the guy said it would be here shortly and hung up. When I called back he told me to "Take it easy." When the pizza finally arrived it was the wrong order and they forgot my soda. To top it all off when I called to complain, the guy said he could replace it but it would take another hour. When I said that was unacceptable his reply: "What do you want me to do about it?" ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! I got my money back and ordered from somewhere else. I don't care how good people say they are, nothing is worth that kind of aggravation.

He said she said. some people say that the service is horrible...I say that is he said she said. Why? Because some never explain their answer... The service isn't "horrible" because you may have to wait longer than some resturaunts...the only reason why the wait is longer is because people enjoy the resturaunt in general. Obviously if it is a well-liked resturaunt, It's not going to be dead. Yes, people may wait but take into consideration that the place is crowded, they don't have TONS of staff, they make fresh food that is very good and have reasonable prices...actually exceptionally reasonable prices and it's good Italian food and traditional,so why WOULD'NT people go there? That's why you may have to wait....but it is totally worth it.

Italian food. This is not authentic Italian cuisine. I am an Italian girl and if they can;t do a simple red sauce right then I dont come back . It is all about the red sauce.

Cozy, perfect for early Sunday meals. My family and I drove down to Marra's before the Phillies game last night and were treated to exceptional service by Rosa, our waitress. She made us feel like we were back at my grandmother's house -- and the food matched her service! Family-oriented, familar, not stuffy and cozy! I can't wait to come back!

Good food, poor service. We have been coming to Marra's for about two years and until this summer I would have given it 5 stars. However, the last two times we went there, we had terrible service and below average food. Our waitress was almost invisible. We had to wait over 40 min. for our pizza and when she brought it out it was burnt. We had finished our waters and our wine, but she never came by to ask if wanted our glasses filled. When we were done eating we had to flag down another waiter to find our waitress so we could get our bill. This all on a fairly quiet weeknight.
