In Short – Founder Richard Allen was one of the most influential ministers in late 18th century Philadelphia. A former slave, Allen created what would become the African Methodist Episcopal Church along with Absalom Jones after withdrawing in 1787 from the nearby St. George's Methodist because of racist policies (most notably segregated graveyards and worship areas). The current Mother Bethel structure is the fourth building to sit on the site.
