Sequins, feathers and golden slippers pay tribute to Philly's best-loved parade..
In Short
For a rewarding dose of Philadelphia's cultural history at its kitschiest, come to South Philly. The word "mummery" comes from the Old French "momer," to wear a mask. On New Year's Day, thousands of people turn out to watch organized bands of men in outrageous (and very expensive) costumes of feathers and sequins march down Broad Street playing stringed instruments and dancing a freeform step that is known as the Mummers Strut.
