Tricky hours, but great selection of stuff in this synagogue-turned-indoor flea market. The furniture showcase downstairs is always spot-on and the jewelry woman upstairs is cranky, but she's got such a great collection of estate rings and vintage eye-glass frames.
A century-old synagogue transformed into quite a bizarre bazaar--courtesy of 20-odd antique vendors..
In Short
Also known as South Street Antiques Market, this place set up shop in a turn-of-the-century house of worship in 1983. These days, about 25 mostly unmarked, colorful booths sell their collectible old wares on the ground floor and in the basement. At the entrance, a vendor who bills herself as "Mod Girl" boasts a booth that drips with costume adornments: Bakelite bangles, sparkly animal pins, plenty of beads and baubles. Both upstairs and down, the selection is heavy on mid-twentieth century.
Terrible Service. Avoid the man who answers the phone and owns the shopping area on the right when you walk in the door. This man is miserable, angry and he will convince you to leave and never return. Get passed him and you will have a lovely time in this unique shopping environment where you are sure to find many, one of a kind treasures and much nicer people. A recent telephone call to the store ended with this man screaming at me and telling me to go f myself. Apparently I called when they were too busy to answer my inquiry. He could have simply asked me to call back at a better time. Avoid him at all costs. PS Don't miss the basement!!!
I love the Basement!. There is a lot going on in the Basement of the old Antiquarian- New, young designers and artists are starting to open booths selling their wares. Its becoming a great place to get original pieces at reasonable prices. Hopefully more vendors will fill in the empty spaces.
philly staple. anytime you need an amazing vintage dress or new/old cords- and don't feel like wading through thrift stores, you know you will find something perfect at the antiquarian. jenny's vintage in the back space and dial v for vintage downstairs are both sure shots. and the prices are suprisingly inexpensive. and i love chatting with the vendors.
Cool Finds. Great place to find a variety of 20th century collectibles and clothing. The place smells real musty and like mothballs, but it's worth a visit!
