In Short
Meat and cheese slicers flank a sandwich assembly line. While sandwich builders construct, the foreman takes orders at the cashier. Sarcone's bread is famous in Philly: it's soft, dense and chewy--perfect for sopping up flavors exuded from sandwiches doused in vinegar, oil and dried herbs. The menu calls them hoagies, but these local delicacies aren't your typical corner-store subs. Try hefty combinations that go by names like "the Booch:" roast beef, asparagus, sharp provolone.

This is a serious sandwich. The bread is crusty and substantial, and they don't skimp on the meats. With prosciutto, Genoa salami, and sharp provolone. Smells of the fresh bread from their bakery... the saltiness of the meat, cheeses, vinegar.

I was bummed out when West Philly's Koch's closed its doors a few years ago, as that deli was the purveyor of what was PREVIOUSLY the best sandwich I have ever had. I don't care anymore, because Sarcone's is better and it doesn't require a trip to the land of undergrads. The CC is the best thing on the menu, a gorgeous pile of roast beef, sauteed spinach, roast garlic, aged provolone (cut into chunks, not sliced) and balsamic vinegar on their peerless bread. God I want one right now.

'nuff said - my favorite is the turkey. The bread is fantastic too - just be sure to get there before they run out - yes, they are THAT popular!

When To Go:
The bread supply often runs out before lunchtime ends, so come early--especially if you plan to take a loaf or two home.
Know Before You Go:
Call ahead to order hoagie trays, antipasti and side orders of olives stuffed with provolone, roasted garlic, hot pepper or prosciutto.
The Extras:
South Philly crooner Sonny Averona's CD is the one non-food-related item sold here, but the music goes perfectly with a little proscuitto.
