A good version of your run of the mill takeout. Vibe is pleasant in there, but it's definitely mostly a takeout joint.
Excellent Chinese food just off South Street.
Ate there with my wife for the first time today and we really enjoyed their vegetarian dishes. I started with the vegetarian wonton soup, which was followed by Moo Shu Vegetables with Tofu and brown rice, This was served with hot tea and fried wonton noodles with duck sauce - all this happy vegetarian could ever want!
My wife had the same soup as I had, but went with the mock chicken with broccoli in garlic sauce - an excellent choice! The service was great and our waiter was very friendly and great to chat with about traveling in China. Sam was back in China taking care of his other restaurant, so we'll just have to wait and meet him next time. We'll be back!
You're All Crazy. You people are nuts - this place STINKS!!! Nasty, greasy, filthy food. In a city with a great Chinatown, how anyone can consider this good Chinese is beyond me. CANNED mushrooms? Are you kidding me? Absolutely NASTY!
Sam.
To the below message on June 15, 2008. Sam is back, and has been back for sometime. He was in China for about 8 months he told us.
I guess you werent checking hard enough.
Great Chinese, Great Vegetarian, Great service. I agree with the last comment. The food's great and Sam is a wonderful host. He was gone for awhile on vacation or something but he's back now. I just went in last week and saw him there even friendlier than ever.
some of the best chinese food i have ever had but where the f*** is sam!!!!. about 2 years ago, my bf and i faithfully started coming to this place every weekend for delicious chinese food. we also had no car so we were going by train, bus, boat you name it!! but after we got our car we came up there one night and some greasy teenage girl was standing behind the counter, and the tables had been moved around, only enough for us to know that it was a difference. the food was not only disgusting but our beloved sam (the front end guy we love, who even knew our orders by heart) was not there. they gave us some junk about how he went on vacation. that was almost 6 months ago. evey so often, when we are on south we drop in, and he still is not there. without any notice, a letter or anything posted in the wonderful wall-o-entertainment, he and his staff were gone. what happened? we stopped eating there. hopefully everythingis okay with sam.(we miss you buddy) ps....that chick at the counter got our order completely wrong, it were things flying around, and we were over charged, twice. if sam aint there i doubt we will eat there evey again.
THE BEST OF SOUTH STREET DINING. I COME TO THIS RESTURANT OFTEN, THE PRICES ARE GREAT , THE SERVICE IS WONDERFUL AND THE FOOD IS THE BEST. IN CASE UR NOT DINING ALONE THEY HAVE A NON VEGATARIAN MENU AS WELL AS THE VEGATARIAN, SO THERE ARE OPTIONS... I NORMALLY GET THE SWEET N SOUR CHICKEN,(VEGATARIAN) WITH THE SEAFOOD SALAD APPETIZER... THEY GIVE U A SIDE OF DRY NOODLES WITH THIS INCREDIBLE SAUCE. AND MY FAVORITE CHINESE SALAD,,, YUMMY!!!! U ALSO GET HOT TEA,,,,,, NO NEED FOR A DRINK UNLESS UR THIRSTY, THEY GIVE U ENUFF TO HAVE SUM FOR LATER.... I LOVE THIS PLACE .... ITS A SOUTH STREET EVENT. AND PLEASE BRING A SMILE.........
good place. I love this place very much, the food is fresh and delicious. The service is top-notch excellent. The staff is very friendly .I recommend this place to anybody.I think Golden Empress Garden is the best chinese restaurant in the city.
is that what they call chicken??.
i would not recommend this place...at least not for anything w/ meat in it.
i had to throw out the general tso's chicken because the "chicken" looked disgusting. i also threw out to throw out the dumplings...i'm not sure what kind of "meat" they put in them but again, it just did not look right. stick to the vegetarian menu.
YUM!. My husband and I LOVE this place. After moving to Philly we tried every Chinese restaurant we came across. I was dissatisfied with the vegetarian options and general taste of each one. Then a friend recommended Golden Empress Garden and we've never gone anywhere since. Their food is amazing. The vegetarian options are to die for, especially if you want a change of pace from steamed veggies. (try the orange "chicken.") My husband isn't a huge fan of chinese food, but now we order it every week. The staff are very friendly and the service is pretty quick (we always get take out). Even though we live in South Philly we've never waited more than 30 minutes for our dinner.
It's hard to go wrong at Golden Empress. No matter if you're vegetarian or a meat lover, the menu at Golden Empress has more than enough tantalizing options to keep you second guessing your choices. If I had to recommend one dish it would be the vegetarian duck with mixed vegetables, which is simply to die for. They make a great chow hofun as well as any of the other staple Chinese dishes you would expect. The service is great, the portions are generous and the prices are reasonable.. I've been frequenting Golden Empress for about 8 years and it never disappoints. I feel confident when I say they are the one restaurant in the city that rivals the best (reasonably priced) offerings in China Town.
