Usually fun!. O'neals has great happy hour deals and daily beer specials, plus the food is affordable and pretty good. Sometimes the crowd is great but othertimes it's blah. It's a mixed crowd- locals, professionals, visitors, young, old... There's darts and poker upstairs some nights. The 2 bathrooms downstairs are unisex, very small and kinda gross. Lots of flat screen TVs- always sports, jukebox. The staff is usually nice and efficient but I've heard them be rude to others (seems the better looking they are, the ruder they can be). Guys can be seen regularly staring at the cute bartenders so maybe that's why they might be rude at times. Overall, great bar!
My favorite Bar.
I'm puzzled by pnative's negative review of O'Neals. As one of the most regular of the regulars, I can tell you authoritatively that it is NOT a white trash crowd. It is a diverse crowd. When I learned of pnative's comments I was sitting with a group of regulars that included an architect, a retired union executive, several people with their own businesses, an Ivy League educated lawyer, and a high school principal. Everyone in this group has a second home either at the shore, Thailand or Mexico. This is just a random group of the regulars and if by white trash pnative meant blue collar, then there are plenty of regulars who are blue collar as well. The beautiful thing about this bar is that everyone is welcome regardless of whether you wear a suit, wear tattered jeans, are covered with tattoos or whatever. No one cares how you make your living as long as you are a good person to drink with. If pnative wants a white collar only bar, may I suggest Rittenhouse Square.
I've never seen a customer treated rudely here unless he or she richly deserved to be.
Greasy food? I've eaten almost everything on the menu and always been pleased. It is not a gastro-pub, but everything they make is made very well.
Thank God for White Trash Bars.
Since I lost my idiot to English dictionary last week I didn't know that "white trash bar" was now the idiot term for a racially and ethnicaly diverse bar with people from every social class. From the group from the Philly DA's office in last Saturday night, to the various union tradesman, to the hip hop crowd, to the skateboarders, to the Rugby team and darts players who frequent this corner bar the only commonality is a desire to be themselves and have a good time. Let's face it O'Neals is an Irish bar that has at least a half-dozen regulars from England!!!!
I don't know where "pnative" is from but if he got "rude" service he must have deserved it. The bartender/waitress staff is phenomenal - and at least on the female side outstanding looking too. I'll leave it to a female reviewer to comment on the men.
As someone who has probably tried every item on the menu I can tell you the Irish stew and chili are excellent and perfect for this time of year. The wings and chicken tenders are very good and the sampler plate with wings, tenders, fries, and pierogies can't be beat for about $8.
O'Neals is the kind of bar that if you only visit Philly once or twice a year you are always going to stop back because the crowd and staff don't turnover ever two weeks and once there you want to come back and see old friends you may have only met once. If you are from anywhere around the 19147 ZIP code you will be there every week.
Awesome beer selection, great crowd, and good food.. I do not understand how some of you people can say that the food is greasy. (Learn to spell "greesy") O'neals has some of the best bar food on south street. Also the bartenders are rude?! I've never encountered it, but I have seen if a customer is rude to the staff then they get the service right back at them. The beer selection is something to desire and their happy hour now is just amazing. Were else are you going to get 1/2 off drinks from 4:30 til 6:30? If anyone reading this reviews really believes the negative hype, then O'neals probably doesn't want you in there.
Don't Waste Your Time - Rude Bartenders, White Trash Crowd.
The good: good american beer selection, lots of tv's, close to S. Street.
The bad: bartenders are pretty rude, food is over priced and greesy, crowd is usually the white trash variety.
Bottom line: Philly has alot more bars to choose from than it once did, O'Neals needs to realize this and up their game.
Mixed feelings about this place, good music, bad entrees, cute female staff, rude males, reasonable prices. This place is a sports fan dream, they have a ton of nice big tv's with evry gane that is on the day your there. The Male bartenders are rude, but the female servers and bartenders are cute and very nice. The food is terrible, unless your getting wings, the fries are good too, but dont try anty of the specialty items because they are over priced ill prepared, and down right gross and overly greesy and overpriced. They have an outstanding selction of bottled beers, overpriced for some but super cheap for others, I was there on a saturday and went to there upstairs bar where they had a dj, he was on of the best dj's I've herad in a reguler bar, he played a excellent mix of hip hop, rock and oldies, and seemed too good for a nieighborhood bar, i alos heard rthe friday night dj is excellent too. The furniture upstairs was falling apart, and the bartender was very nice to me but was impatient with my girl and her friends when they had some questions for her she walked away from them, and then rolled her eyes at the tip she was left, i guess she didnt realize that they were tipping according to service not tipping because of obligation. I would recommend this place for sports watching and even to hear good music from the djs or the awesome jukebox. Stay away from the food except for the fries or wings. And avoid trying to be friendly with the regulars in the bar who seem dumb and prejudice( just from eavesdropping a conversation) and have a white yrash vibe to them, and if you can avoid the male bartenders because they are flat out rude and not affraid to show you they dont give a care about you, or your concerns about the greesy under cooked sanwiches ( oh yeah the mac and cheese tasted like macoroni and oil, not cheese at all. But just on the beer selection abnd tv's alone this place is worth a trip, I wanna go try their whole selection of imports
one of the best bar staffs in the city. oneals has been my favorite bar since i moved to the city. I love the bartenders there, they are fast and efficient and friendly. Ive never had any problems getting a good drink from any of them. It can be a little loud, but hey,you are in a bar after all, If you want a quiet evening with friends, sports bars on south street wont be the vibe you are looking for. If you want to hang out somewhere fun, then come to oneals.
Nasty Bartenders. Hey, I've heard the stories about O'neal's. The bartenders in the place treat you like trash. Maybe it's the proximity to the South Street scene, they figure you're not a local and won't be back again. They really act like they're doing you a favor by serving you. An example, a friend in our group took 'too long' deciding on what beer to order and the bartender just sighed and walked away. Then he made it a point to stand at the other end of the bar and give us stupid looks. When I asked him about it, he threatened to kick us all out of the bar!?! After sitting there a while, I noticed this attitude was normal for the customers that he didn't know. If you want to be treated like trash, try this place. Too many other good bars in Philly!
This ever-inviting watering hole proves that local denizens, sports fans and South Street revelers can party in peace..
It's a neighborhood watering hole-meets-DJ lounge-meets-sports bar. TVs are usually tuned to sports; for the internationally inclined, a schedule near one television outlines the world schedule for the week. DJs come in after 10pm, Wednesday through Saturday. The smaller bar upstairs has a board for English darts and serves both busy weekend nights and private parties; there's also a small outdoor patio in the back.
Best Sports Bar in the City for a reason. I went to O'Neal's on vacation a few weeks ago and happened to be there during a phillies game and had an absolute blast. Also happened to see that a reviewer blasted the place. Huh????? That same person blasted EVERY establishment they visited. O'Neal's is a BAR. A great, old school, neighborhood bar. It is smokey, loud, people yell at the TV's......IT'S AWESOME!!!! Everyone is so into the game and so friendly, I would absolutely go back every time I'm in Philly. My fiance' and I both had great meals there also. The wings were killer, and the staff was VERY knowledgeable about the beer, the food, and the phillies' stats. I would recommend the burgers as well, they do a burger with roast pork, provolone and red peppers that I crave to this day. VERY RECOMMENDED. Don't believe the haters!!!!
