Editorial Review for Tattooed Mom – by Jason Clampet

In Short
One of the few South Street bars that deserves more than the occasional pub crawl pop-in, Tattooed Mom has been able to forge a sturdy identity of its own in an otherwise flavor-of-the-moment atmosphere. Attitude can be heavy when stools and tables are at a premium. Leather jackets, slicked-back hair, hot-rod rockers and, of course, tattoos are in abundance most of the time. A well-stocked jukebox (heavy on the rock 'n roll) keeps the place lively.

Insider Tips

Where to Sit

Traffic from South Street usually keeps the downstairs bar crowded. Upstairs there's another, more private, bar, along with pool and a few barber's chairs that provide a kick for first-timers.

The Extras

There are a few types of Yuengling on tap in addition to the standards, and a cider. Mom seems to be having a little battle with Copabanana for the finest Spanish fries on the street. Her choice of waffle-cut potatoes lets her eke out a victory.

This is, without a doubt, the best bar on South Street. You get the punk dive atmosphere without the stereotypical typical punk dive attitude. Forget what the previous reviewer "sicksicksick" said. I'm from Jersey and have been going to Tattooed Mom for years. I've never had a problem, I've never been harrassed and I've never caught attitude. Ever. I've gone in short sleeves with my tattoos showing, and I've gone in looking like your average joe...and have been treated exactly the same...very well by the staff. You can be social in Tattooed Mom...you just have to know your atmosphere. You can't expect everyone to be DYING to talk to you...but if you politely add something to an open conversation...you'll find you'll fit in as long as you're up on your bar etiquette. The locals & regulars get first glance as far as service...as well it should be. However, no matter how crowded it's been...I've never gone an unreasonable amount of time without being taken care of. The food is good and they have vegetarian-friendly options. I usually go with the veggie-burger and it's always tasty. In my opinion, both the food & drinks are very reasonably priced, though I only drink beer when I'm here...so I don't know what they charge for liquor. For the uninitiated...if you go to Tattooed Mom, be yourself...don't pretend to be something you aren't...and don't expect people to either love or hate you based on whether or no you're part of their "scene". Just go there to have a few drinks, eat some good food and enjoy a killer jukebox...and you'll have a good time.

Pros: cheap food, cheap drinks, good service

Cons: the bathrooms are a little funky...but remember it IS a dive bar

this is a great laidback place - ladies, come here if you don't want a ton of frat boys hitting on you - sicksicksick is clearly an idiot - sorry sweetcheeks, not everyone goes to bars to "make conversation" - take yourself to Dave and Busters instead ~ yummy food too, good beer - what more can you ask for ?

Pros: good atmosphere, no stupid folk abound

Cons: none for me

A good beer selection, tasty fries and plenty of inked-up regulars make this a standout bar on the otherwise mainstream South Street.  See the full editorial review.
