Editorial Review for Chef's Market – by Lauren McCutcheon

In Short
Within this downstairs market, shoppers bustle around in combat boots, pashminas, business suits, staff in white jackets and green caps. And everyone is here for one thing: good, convenient food--some ready to eat, some grocery style. Director Ed Barranco can plan dinner for one or a feast for hundreds, no matter what the price range. From croissants to crab cake, spaghetti to sausage, toilet paper to turnips, the market carries it all.

Insider Tips

Know Before You Go

Call far in advance during busier times of the year: winter holidays, spring and fall wedding weekends.

When to Go

The market prepares extras for last-minute shoppers, and stays open on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.

On The Menu

Stop by early for a cheap cup of quality joe and a cranberry scone; come in at lunch for a grilled panini or a heaping helping of gourmet salad from the bar. Eat in the little cafe area (remember to pay first.)

With cereals that cost over 7 bucks and chips at double their price at large chain supermarkets, don't expect to frequent chef's market as your neighborhood grocery store (unless you are a billionaire and you are used to that kind of thing). Most food staples are overpriced heavily, and merchandise get s little old on the shelves. On the pro side, they have awesome ice cream and other gourmet frozen treats to tempt the appetite.

Pros: hard to find gourmet foods

Cons: prices to be balked at

I have had the pleasure of working with chefs on many occasions and have been astounded everytime. When i initially considered catering with them i requested a list of references and was handed a 20 sheet booklet. Everyone from sports teams to the largest corporations in and around the city uses them and for darn good reason there food blows everyone elses away. When you are in business for as long as they have been, 23 years i think, you are doing something right. i have also used them for many other events and have been completely satisfied every single time.

Pros: service, quality, Experience

Cons: none
