Near the airport so fill up your rental on the way to PHL and pick up a cheesesteak for the ride home. You won't be dissapointed.
Cheesesteak from paradise.
You've got to be kidding me. I'm the first to write anything about this place? Granted, this little shop is unusually located, next to a gas station a few scenic South Broad blocks from the sports complex. I found myself trekking to this spot for my first visit on the glorious morning of Sunday, April 20; this particular place had landed their sandwich at the #4 spot on WiP's "best cheesesteaks" list, and were the earliest opening on Sunday morning. I popped in at 10:30 or so, giving them a half hour to get things going. Two other men were sitting down at one of the three(?) tables inside. I ordered from a nice woman at a window reminiscent of Pat's, only indoors. The walls were littered with action shots of various Philly sports figures, which I perused during the four-minute prep time (sweet).
I got my cheesesteak to go. It was smaller than I was expecting, perhaps because my last two were from Dalessandro's and Gooey Looey's. But sitting at my steering wheel, I took one bite into this beautiful sandwich and every doubt about it went racing from my mind. The roll was quite possibly the best I've ever had, with no cut down the middle (better for the road). The meat was sliced relatively thick and not chopped into tiny pieces, which can present a problem at other places (Rick's) where the meat tends to cling together by strands of fat or tough meat. This was not the case here. Every bite was a delicious as the one before, the onion fried perfectly and distributed evenly, providing a sublimely flavorful backdrop to every single bite. It was gone too fast and I considered going back for another; but once you're on 76, don't be ridiculous, you're not turning around.
This was a 30-minute voyage from my house, but literally blocks from the sports complex. And from now on, every visit I make to watch our beloved Phils will be accompanied by a visit to this inexpensive, unassuming and outstanding cheesesteak spot.
