What Our Expert Scouts Say

Tacconelli's Pizza
March 01, 2013

First of all, don't be intimidated by the order-ahead system — it's super easy. Secondly, Tacc's is BYO for alcohol, but they won't raise an eyebrow if you bring sides, too. It's common to see big parties toting along Tupperware'd salads or boxed-up birthday cakes.

It's one of those no-ambiance, no-service, but amazing food type places. A real treat for out-of-towners that have never had real pizza.

The Best Pizza!! Period.. This pizza is the best. Hands down. I live for food and there is nothing that even comes close to this pizza.

Now, I can totally understand why people get turned off by the service, decor, paper plates, etc. But that's the charm. Here are some tips to not let the other factors taint an otherwise PERFECT eating experience.

1. Expect a wait. Especially on a Friday or Saturday. Don't ask where your pizza is. Because the answer will be something like this "It will be there when it's done."

2. Bring salad! This place has one thing on their menu- pizza. They know the pizzas take forever, and they are happy for you to bring salad or some sort of other appetizer. Makes the wait not as harsh.

3. Bring alcohol if you like alcohol. It's BYO! This also helps take the edge off of the wait.

4. Just be happy that they are not trying to quickly turnover your table. Bring good company, good salad, good wine and the wait is just fine.

5. White pie with spinach and tomatoe!!!

Enjoy!

DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!!!. What a disappointment, especially after reading the HYPE on this place. First of all, their whole attitude is a turn-off. The wait staff are plain rude and everyone acts like they're doing you a big favor just by taking your money. The pizza was a -1 on a scale of 10. The sauce was sugery-sweet and had no Italian flavor at all. The skimpy, $20 pie we ordered had almost nothing on it. You needed a microscope to find ANY cheese. REALLY cheap paper plates, plastic utensils, styrofoam cups and no atmosphere (unless you consider "attitude" atmosphere)? I would say that whoever owns this place spends less than 50 cents on everything you pay $20 for, if that! The people who like this place must enjoy being treated badly, paying too much for bad food or have never had a really good pizza? Even if the pizza were any good (which it's not) the whole attitude thing there is not worth spending a dime on.

dont beleive all that you read !!. After reading other reviews, I went here prepared to wait a long time for the pie and I was prepared for rude service. I got there 5 minutes after the rest of my party arrived and 10 minutes later had a hot pizza in front of me. Great tasing thin crust well done the way I like it with good sauce and well cooked toppings. The brick oven does it like no other. We had 5 pies total and they were served by a few different waitresses. They were so nice that I joked with them and asked when they will start being rude. They laughed and said "you must have been online huh"? They joked about pointy bra comments and one of them said she does not even wear a bra! Gotta love a good sense of humor Maybe its the competition trying to knock them down? Or perhaps these people expect the service they get when they pay 200 bucks for a dinner for two. It was years since the last time I was there. Im not waiting that long for the next trip down! Having a problem with entering a 5 star rating on my mini PC. I will try the upgrade on the other computer soon

Save your money and time. I spent $45.50 on 3 pizza and was never more disappointed. This was my first trip in more then 3 years. It took me over 1 1/2 hours. All 3 were burnt. I like a thin pie but over cooking does not leave much to eat. The white spinach was difficult to recognize with a few blotches of green in a circle of brown burnt dough. The red sauce was fair. They are definitely living on a past reputation. Going to Charlie's on the Blvd. or Vince's on Grant Ave. I would have gotten 3 times the amount of dough, sauce and cheese. The only thing I wouldn't have gotten are the burnt marks on the bottom of the pies. Very, very disappointing.

Great Pizza/ Wait Stuff Should be Replaced. The pizza was exceptional. I especially like it because they offer white pie. Unlike most places this white has flavor.

I, however, could so with out the wait staff. They are lazy, rude, and in general made me never want to go back to the place. This waitress was so bad that she was actually talking about us right in front of us. She took an hour to retrive my order and then got made when I asked where it was. Even though I called to reserve my pies hours in advance. It is because of the staff that I did not give 5 stars.

THE best pizza in Philadelphia.. I'm not one to publish restaurant reviews, in fact this is my first. But I felt compelled, bordering on a sense of duty, to stand up for this joint. I have traveled that country border to border and coast to coast. I have lived in NY. This is without doubt the most sublime pizza offered on the planet. Bar none.

I read some of these other reviews and begin to lose my faith in humanity. All the complaints I read are "terrible service" "not enough parking" "had to drive" "reserving dough is a gimmick" "WAH!" If this is all your going to complain about, there a quite a few Steven Starr restaurants downtown where you can dine, complain until your blue in the face, and ultimately be unheard. This place was by an Italian immigrant at the turn of the century and has been owned by the family since. They have never tried, nor will they ever try to impress you in the 5-star crowd. I agree with Murray, give me my local waitress in the t-shirt and loafers! give me an hour wait for my pizza! To sum it up, if I'm one death row and my last meal is requested, Tacconelli's will be that meal.

The Legend Grows. I laugh at the folks giving this joint bad reviews because of poor service due to not being fawned on by a busy waitstaff populated by folks from a tough neighborhood who really don't want to hear about it. To me it all adds to the charm. Who doesn't like gettin called 'Hon' by a surly woman with a bazooka bra and comfy shoes from Payless? Are you kidding me? Offer courtesy and you'll do fine. Quite frankly I'd take a kick to the kids to ensure I had a shot at getting what I feel is simply the best pizza I've ever had - the white pizza. It defies description. Just reserve your friggin' dough, go there with patience and beer, and order the white pizza and then whatever else you can think to eat. Don't forget to reserve too much dough. Yes, you're going to wait. I defy anyone to have leftovers sitting in their fridge after, eh I don't know, 24 hours we'll say.

Great Pizza, cool BYO anything, waitresses(huh)?. Never seen a place. To blend in with locals BYO beer/wine/salad/cake - all they make is pizza. And it is very good.

Not worth it!!!!!!!!!!!!. Drove in excited to taste the pizza that is supposed to highly rated. The waitress was rude and gave horrible service. If they don't know you as a regular they totally give you bad service and basically ignore you during your whole meal. The waitress had a rude attitude, she took our order and then never came back to check on us or offer us refills. She would talk to other customers who were regulars minutes at a time while we waited for service. Getting a box and our check was like asking for a million dollars. The pizza is overrated and we ordered two with each one cooked differently. I would never go back and would recommend that you don't waste your time if your thinking about going there.
