Nasty. Nasty place. Left restaurant to find 2 rats frolicking by the dumpster, and our waiter urinating between parked cars.
Disappointing for the price.
To be fair, the food here is not the worst I have had. Unfortunately it was the worst for relatively high price. Most important of all, the portions are extremely small. The so-called Rack of Lamb is miserly in size, but extravagant in price. The veal dishes were better priced, but very bland.
One earlier reviewer pointed out that the seafood list was small. It certainly is. This establishment also does not serve what is on the menu. The so-called "Chilean Seabass" they constantly have on "special" is obviously "Escolar" or the infamous "White Tuna" that is greasy and indigestible. It was a nasty ammonia taste and bothers the GI tract. The so-called South African Lobster appetizer is most likely crawfish or imitation lobster. The Lamb was the most overpriced, I can get five times the amount of lamb at a half decent kebab house for $11 . This place wants well over $40.
Now, to be fair, I can find a few positives.
The salmon entree was decent and only somewhat overpriced. The appetizers are fairly good. I sampled a calamari appetizer that was pretty good and I once had a Butternut Squash Soup that was actually excellent. The "free" mozzarella and pepper appetizers were good too.
As noted in earlier reviews, the wine was very overpriced and you get less than half a glass. On the positive side, the wine tasted like good quality vintage and the coffee was excellent.
I am generous in giving Two Stars as the appetizers are generally better than the main dishes. As much as I disliked the main dishes (and prices) , the appetizers were actually pretty good.
I can not beleive any negative posts for this place!!!.
I have eaten all over the country and pride myself in knowing the difference between a nice place and an outstanding place. This place is outstanding!!! I have gone there for extremely important business meetings, simple get togethers with a few freinds, and romantic evenings with my wife. They all work...not many places offer that to the scale that this place does. As a matter of fact, I am going to go there tonight simply because the food is on my mind. I cant wait to find out what specials they will have.
By the way, the small bar, limited menu and owner telling you the specials are called character traits. That is why every dish is so damn good! I would not cahnge a thing about this place with the exception of popping a few more up in various locations!!!
I'm not trying to fly launchpads over here. Still top notch The ONLY place in NE Philly for a true dining experience. Somehow not the same since Wilbur left
Disappointing experience. After not eating here for many years, we decided to return recently. We arrived around 7PM on a Friday and waited 1/2 hour for a table. They do not accept reservations so be prepared to wait. The bar area is small and can get very crowded. The menu was limited in seafood selections. There was a tuna steak and a fish special(chilean sea bass). The other fish dishes were served over pasta, or in a cream sauce. Meat selections were fried or served in a cream sauce. Service was spotty. Following desert, our server immediately brought us the check without asking us if we were finished or asking us if we wanted coffee. The wine list seemed pricey, averaging about 3x over liquor store prices. Cocktails, however, averaged about $8. Parking is sufficient behind the restaurant in strip mall lot.
Thumbs up for the chef !. Let's just say there is nothing you could possibly complain about. The atmosphere is cozy and helps you to unwind, soft Italian music plays at just the right volume, the service exceeds the charts and the everything from the Italian rolls, oil and roasted peppers to the app, salad, entree's and desert will leave your tastebuds craving more. My favorite is the Veal Primo !
Awesome. Best Italian food outside of home. Give it a try, you won't be sorry.
