Tips for Old Brauhaus Restaurant

Not even a German restaurant.. So after reading the other reviews of this joint, I decided to go get some good German food. I drove 45 minutes to get to this place only to find out that it doesn't even serve German food at all. They had one German beer on tap, and no appetizers as far as I could find.

So, in summary, if you're looking for a German place this isn't it. However, if you're looking for an 11 dollar salad, this is your place.

this used to be the best german restaurant in the philadelphia area. My wife and I had been going to the Blue Ox for 8 years before they decide this past July to close after 40 years. The owner, Walter Grunde, was a surly, old crumugin who knew how to serve the best potato pancakes and weiner schnitzle around. The atmosphere always reminded me of the Huas' in pictures I have seen of Bavaria-- cozy with polished wood and beautiful stained glass.

The beers on tap were always plentiful and cold; the wine list was extensive. Whether we were eating dinner or brunch, I never had a bad meal. The service could be lacking at times, but the food was always prepared perfectly. My wife and I are mourning the loss of a Philadelphia icon and one of our favorite places to dine.

A personal favorite. I love this restaurant. The food is good german fare with a couple of extras thrown in. The selection of beer on tap is outstanding. I've gone here just for beer and fried kraut. With the accordian player the atmosphere is fantastic, it once made me want to cry. Of course I had a few beers in me at the time.

Excellent!. We love this place. The food is wonderful, the ambience is romantic, yet friendly. The wait staff is very informed, helpful and friendly. They serve a jar of preserves before your meal, that is just totally out of this world!!! The 3 or 4 times we have been there, there was an accordian player providing music. There isn't a lot of seating, so I'd recommend reservations for larger parties. It's not the most kid friendly place, so that makes for a great 'date night'. They have an extensive variety of beers, and with drinks, appetizers, and dinners for 2 the bill was usually around $80. Worth every penny. Just wish they were a little closer, now that we moved to 'jersey'.

German at its best. I live in Germany for 6 years. This restaurant does it right.
