Editorial Review for Last Drop Coffeehouse – by Lauren McCutcheon

In Short
On a shady corner of 13th and Pine exists a quiet example of quintessentially modern American coffeehouse. With its mismatched chairs and bistro tables, high tin ceilings, unframed paintings and amiably grungy workers, the Last Drop typifies what cafe connoisseurs come to expect from an "alternative" hangout. Cappuccino and other frothy beverages are made with New Harmony and La Colombe beans and come in Starbucks-size au lait mugs or hefty pint glasses (for the iced versions). Fresh Samantha juices are for sale, as are bagels, Bundt cakes and breakfast breads.

WoW! This place was totally awesome and bad at the same time. I think I love it and hate it. Wow. Ok.

Pros: I like the name

Cons: But I don't REALLY like the name

I visited this place for the first time with my friend today, and I have two words: totally disgusting! The coffee I ordered tasted like it was burned and the tea made my friend's stomach upset. I thought about buying some of the cake they had, but it was very expensive and looked old. If the drinks that they offered weren't bad enough, the place was dirty and they don't bother removing the homeless people panhandiling. We couldn't find seating on the first floor, but they have a basement seating area, where there was a homeless man apparently heating his food on the space heater who then asked us for money to help him out, and later asked us to move so he could put newspapers in the big sack he had under the bench. There were mousetraps all over the floor, but they didn't seem to be catching any of the rodents I saw! The bathrooms felt so dirty to me I wouldn't use them. All over upstairs were notes about the free internet they have, but when we went to use it it didn't work and a man who said he was a regular customer said the internet hadn't been working all morning and that when he asked he was told it might not work at all during the day. We stayed long enough to have been harassed by the homeless man and then left looking for better coffee elsewhere, hopefully free of panhandlers! I want to know where a manager was, I can't believe for a second a manager would allow a homeless man to panhandle and store his stuff or allow the dining area, or the restrooms, to be left that disgusting!

Funky decor, friendly employees and first-rate cappuccinos make this a required stop.  See the full editorial review.
