Fantastic Spicy Chinese Food. Four Rivers is fantastic because it offers its customers authentic Szechuan food that has distinct flavor rather than something created to appeal to caucasian taste. My family and I appreciate spicy food and often come to Chinatown for just that type of authentic taste. Four Rivers' house specialty chicken is a must-have delight. The spicy bubbling specialty fish gives great presentation and tastes even better than it looks! I would absolutey recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants focus on the food and isn't necessarily looking for the bells and whistles meant to attract tourists!
Best authentic Sichuan spicy cuisine!.
note: this restaurant has Chinese Sichuan ("Szechuan") food, not Taiwanese as stated in the other review!
All the Chinese students in Philly love this place, as its food is very authentic and SO GOOD. If it says spicy, don't expect the usual toned down American version. This is the real stuff.
This place also has the best Ma La Huo Guo (Chinese hot pot), available spicy or non--ma la huo guo must be ordered at least a day ahead of time, though. If you plan on going during a weekend evening, make reservations. It'll be packed.
Good Taiwanese!. Crappy ambience aside, if you ask your waiter for recommendations/specials, you will get excellent dishes for a very good price. Their crystal spicy wontons are the best I've had in the US -nearly as good as Taipei. Their "small dishes" - in the refrigerated case as you walk in- is what is traditionally served at many taiwanese restaurants. Admittedly, if you stick only to the american-chinese dishes on the menu, you will find very average food. Try the crab roe tofu, spicy beef hotpot(you can get it less spicy), and three cup basil chicken.
