Where's the fun.................where's the booze?. It has been a 20 year tradition for me and my friends to follow the Army Navy game with a visit to Brownie's. In planning our annual event the only non-negotiable has been Brownie's! This year we found a "spruced up" atmosphere with a surly bartender and mixed drinks that required a chemical analysis to find any presence of alcohol! Next year our plans will exclude the Brownie's interlude.
worst pub experience on the crawl.
My friends and I all had a philly pub crawl and stopped her last. The bar was empty so we proceeded to play a round of pool on the pay table.
After half the game the bartender started badgering us quite rudely because not all of us got drinks and some only soda.
There are plenty of pubs to find in Olde City..unless you want to be heckled, I would find somewhere else to go.
This oasis for low-key beer drinkers in the middle of Old City boasts 14 rotating micro-brewed and imported beers on tap..
In Short
This Irish pub bills itself as a respite from the glam scene that is most of Old City, and with the exception of Friday and Saturday nights when the fraternity crowd takes over, it is. Local selections and Irish standards are king among the 14 seasonally rotating taps, with frequent appearances from Victory, Philadelphia Brewing Company and Troegs Guinness, Harp and Smithwick's are old time regulars, but theres always room left over for little known selections, as well.
Old city's most comfortable and unpretentious pub. Brownie's is like an oasis in the Old City desert of swank bars/clubs. There's no need to try and impress anyone here as the place itself is unassuming and has a very comfortable vibe. The beer selection is top notch and changes regularly. The bartenders are also really cool people and do a great job with the music they play on their i-pods (over the last few months we've heard everything from Jimmy Cliff to Horton Heat to Johnny Cash to Zeppelin). My wife works in Old City and this is our favorite spot to stop in for a couple of beers before heading home, and Saturday afternoons and early evenings are great for college football too. For those who don't need all the flash and attitude Brownie's rocks.
Overrated!. Everytime I go to Old City I go to Brownies, you think I would learn. Its always too crowded, althought everything is crowded in Old City...I just didn't like it. There is no other way to explain in.
