What People Are Saying About Genji Japanese Restaurant

In Short – The Center City Genji is the sleeker, younger sister of the University City location. A line of unobtrusive chefs stands at attention and work their magic behind the spotless sushi bar near the door. On the other side of the bar, a quiet following of mostly business people stop by for a quick and light repast.

- Party of a Few?:
- If you're dining with a loquacious companion or two, skip the sushi bar and head for the tables in the back.
Excellent, moderately priced Japanese food

We had a wonderful dinner at Kingyo (Genji) restaurant. The sashimi was very tender and fresh, the beef teryaki was tender and tasty and a yellowfin collar fish preparation was excellent and reasonably priced. The homemade ice cream was also quite good (try the mango). Our only disappointment is that they were out of sea bass and a Cabernet that we wanted to order but provided another excellent Cabernet. The service was friendly and efficient. If you want an outstanding dinner close to Rittenhouse Square but away from the noise and crowds, Kingyo (Gengi) restaurant is highly recommended.
- Pros: fresh fish, excellent sashimi, attentive service
- Cons: missing some menu items

I used to go to Genji all the time when I was a student and it was so so good. I just moved back to Philly and it was one of my first stops. What a difference and not in a good way. The fish was way too salty and didn't taste fresh at all. I don't think I'll be going back any time soon.
- Pros: reasonable price
- Cons: sushi not as good as I remember
Deteriorated

I totally agree on "Onece the best, now a disappointment" and "Totally overated". It was really disappointing for those who knew Genji was excellent around 2002...
Extremely Overrated!!!

We'd heard that Genji was good and there were a lot of people there when we got there, but it turned out to be a huge disappointment. Our salads were a plate of limp, browning lettuce that were way overpriced. We ordered a few rolls and none of them were particularly good. The spicy tuna was awful - when we told the waiter we didn't care for it, he explained they used a jalpeno based spicy sauce, not the type of sauce most places use. We didn't even eat it. The other rolls were blah and didn't really have any flavor. The soy sauce was so salty we couldn't even use it - the nori tasted too salty as well. The service was mediocre at best. I have eaten at about 6 other sushi restaurants in Philly and this is the worst yet. If you want really good, really fresh sushi - go to Kisso in Old City. I've been there over a dozen times and have never been disappointed.
- Pros: None
- Cons: Quality, Service
Not impressed...

I don't even know how Genji competes with the other sushi bars in center city. The sushi here is not fresh and the restaurant on the whole is not welcoming. I would much rather eat at Fuji and get the freshest fish at a reasonable price. Also their sake selection is very limited and generic.
- Cons: Bad fish, bad sake list, way too bright!!!!
