The Scene
The Austrian Village is one of those places you have to be told about, and even then you might drive past it two or three times before you notice the discrete facade. Inside, it's a bare-bones affair. An immense Alpine mural covers the back wall, just beyond a once modern bar to the right.

The Regulars
There's often an odd feeling that something's going on here. Indeed, the Village takes on the form of a rollicking club on the weekends, when those of varying degrees of Teutonic extraction gather to dance the traditional dances of the fatherland to the strains of some pretty rockin' accordion bands. If you're not literally starving to death, you may want to consider sharing your dinner--the size of the pork chop platter could just about put you in the hospital.

An interesting atmosphere- kind of sports bar meets little germany with a very familial setting (I kind of felt like I was the only name they didn't know but still polite). They have some traditional German food like bratwurst and knotwurst but you will also find wings, burgers, etc The food was pretty good and the prices were reasonable. The service was good. I don't have any complaints, so if you like German fod or want to try something different I would recommend it.

When my wife and I were in Germany several years ago, we were taken by our hosts to a great restaurant in the Mosel valley. It was just amazing how much it reminded us of the Austrian Village. In the best ways. Except the Village does't have eel soup nor any venison. The Austian Village is now one of the only authentic German restaurants in the Philadelphia. Happily, it seems to be doing fine, although the majority of the clientele does seem to be getting a bit old. But this speaks to the Germanic influence of the place, I suppose. The beer selection is not as good as I'd like, but the German beers are really fresh, and the tap is always very clean, and if authenticity in German beer means anything, it means fresh and clean. When our German friends visit the US the eschew German beers because they are not fresh and local. When you travel to Germany, you'll find you can't even get a Bavarian beer in Cologne. Beer is supposed to be fresh and local. Well, of course, we Americans love to have German beer with our German food, so the Austrian Villages limited selection but fresh and clean will do. The food is pure good traditional German fare. Great schnitzel. Get it with the mushroom sauce. The farmers feast has a knuckle and lots of wursts. The sauerbraten is authentic. The sauerkraut is simply as good as available The potato salad is perfect. We happen to love German food, and this is the best place around here to get it. Very large portions. Reasonable prices. I know the prices have gone up some, but it's still very resonable. It looks like a German restaurant. A bar on the side, rows of tables leading up to the dance floor. Unforunately, dancing is now only on Saturdays, so that is when you should go. Polka and waltz with great accordian bands and lots of old Germans who will smile when you try to dance. Just follow the circular flow and you'll be fine. Important: Take cash. No cards accepted.

The Austrian Village is unasumming in this busy Rocklege neighborhood. Upon entering the newly remodled atrium-- it is now handicapped accessible-- with the soda fountian type bar to the right and rows of wooden tables lined symetrically from one end of the dining area to the other, one could decide this place is neither cozy nor sparce. After being seat by a friendly girl dressed in traditional Austrian attire, my wife and I ordered a hooegarden and a warsteiner on tap, respectively. There is not much of a wine list. This place used be less expensive than it is now; but it is still pretty inexpensive. I prefer the german dishes, but everything on the menu looks nice. If you want a nice inexpensive meal with good beer, this is the place to go.
