Editorial Review for Inn at Irving Place – by Gayot.com
The Scene
There is neither sign nor awning, which is perhaps one of the reasons rock and fashion royalty flock to these two restored 19th-century townhouses just south of Gramercy Park. Inside are 12 charming rooms, each named for a personality associated with the neighborhood. (Think Madame Olenska from "The Age of Innocence.") The townhouses' original architectural details have been retained and restored, including 14 fireplaces, burled-wood shutters and wood-paneled walls.
The Details
Amenities are what set these rooms apart from the ordinary B&B. Beds sport Frette linens, and technology hums quietly away. The large bathrooms are luxuriously accented with brass fixtures and ceramic tiles. Other services include in-room massage, room service, concierge and complimentary breakfast in bed. Lady Mendl's serves afternoon tea on period English and French china (reservations required). There are also two other tea rooms; all can be used for private parties from 10 to 50.

Insider Tips
When to GoGramercy Park is open to the public just three times a year: Gramercy Park Day, Christmas Day and Yom Kippur.
Know Before You GoTo maximize the sophistication--and sense of romance--children under 12 are discouraged. Also, there's no elevator in the two-floor walkup.
Look GoodThe inn's Cibar lounge attracts cigar aficionados, including women who love the tufted seating and "soft" ambience.
The ExtrasMake reservations for tea at Lady Mendl's downstairs.

the loveliest hotel in new york is where we stayed last night and were treated like royalty. we felt like a king and lady in this subdued and elegant brownstone near gramercy park, frette linens, fine bone china, the whole shebang and no mass market gimmicks. a remarkable experience in travel.
Pros: beautiful, great service, private
Cons: no elevator

I've stayed in 50+ hotels throughout NYC. The two times I've stayed at the Inn at Irving Place, I was treating myself and my date to a cozy night away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Staff was extremely friendly (despite super-late check-in), and had great recommendations on parking options. Breakfast was yummy. Accomodations were comfortable. Crazy overpriced in comparison to B+B's outside of NYC... but then again, this is NYC.
