Bad Business. My mother and I went to Franco & Luigis hoping to have a great meal and it was quite the opposite. The place was empty so there is no excuse for them. Our entrees arrived and mine was quite good. My mother's dish was the worst thing I've ever tasted. It was supossed to be a dish of pasta seafood and vodka sauce. It tasted like cinnamon. Someone in the kitchen grabbed the wrong spice. I called the waitress over and she went back into the kitchen to talk to the chef. She then brought the dish back out to my mother (who does that), and told us she was going to charge us for it. Keep in mind nothing had been eaten. She said she could give us pasta w marinara to replace it, but we had to pay for the original dish ($25). She then asked us if we wanted to take it home. Why would we want to take home something so disgusting. We paid for what was eaten (my dish), left a tip and headed out. The owner was too busy taking a private phone call to discuss the problem with us so we left. He chased us out yelling something about us not going out to eat very much. At that my mother and I laughed at him for making such a scene when he was wrong and we drove away. When my mother got home she noticed that the waitress boxed half of a ravioli from my dish, which was much less than was left on my plate. I'm sorry we paid for anything and I'm sorry we tipped such a pathetic excuse for a waitress. Never eat there! They use BAD BUSINESS practices!
Italian Authenticity!!.
I recently dined here amongst a party of four. A quaint, Italian restaurant, discreetly nestled in the back of a pizzaria. Live opera music (must be silent during the performances as noted in the menu). Several of the guest performed a song on there make shift elevated stage and the talented accordion player was able to pick up in chime in with some of the songs that were not in "the book". Yes, there is a music book there to pick out the song you'd like to sing or hear the solo instrumentalist play.
The four walls of the restaurant were lined with all sorts of dated paictures of Center City landmarks and "old people", lighting was soft and service was exceptional.
We went on a Thursday evening, the dinning room was at about 75% capacity.
Make reservations to be on the safe side as we did.
Most Romantic spot in So Philly.
Very cozy So. Philly red sauce restaurant with added bonus of singing staff. Food is good and wholesome and plentiful! And it is BYOB. However their great pizza is take out only.
Parking is a problem and it can get quite noisy but that is part of the fun. If you want to experience a neighborhood Italian spot where all the locals go, this is it.
Great Food!!! Great Service! Beautiful operatic vocals! A must see! Owner is still on premises and a Sweetheart!. What a great time! Great BYOB place in the city. Food is amazing, authentic south philly italian...beautifully operatic live music. We had a blast! I would definately recommend! A must experience!
Red sauce kings of South Philly provide operatic tunes as well as pasta..
In Short
The experience here is as much about the operatically talented staff (the bus persons, waiters and a co-owner all croon classic tunes) as it is the cuisine, making this pasteria one of the most entertaining restaurants in the city. The menu extends beyond typical South Philly classics to house specialties like portobello mushrooms stuffed with broccoli rabe and crabmeat in a vodka sauce over gnocchi.
What a dissappointment!. i was expecting a delicious dish of pasta, as i've enjoyed many times in the past. no more pasta dishes? what kind of italian restaurant are you? my waiter was drunk (at the least). the usually charming host was no where to be seen. the talent, well not up to par. To top all this the prices have increased and the quality decreased. if people in the restaurant business would stop getting so greedy and pay more attention to the goings on of their establishment, maybe they'd be in business a bit longer? i looked forward to going to this eatery at least 3 times per month, they will never see me or the many friends that i've sent there over the past couple years, you lost it!!
NOT WHAT I EXPECTED - I SEE YOUR POINT. After an ok dinner at Franco & Luigi's I came home & decided to read some review, since I was there once before & it was romantic (at least that's how I remembered it) took my wife for our anniversary(tonight). Let me begin by saying it didn't 'stink', the food was good. I had to laugh when I read the review from "not what I expected",I too had the same waiter, it had to be. He was a little guy who was very full of himself, and although I found his flirtting with my wife ammusing, she didn't. So, although the restaurant didn't totally suck, the service was STRANGE to say the least, and my anniversary wasn't what I'd planned. I also was wondering where is Franco? of "FRANCO & LUIGI"?? The other time I was there, he was a great presence. WHERE DID HE GO?
Opposite of what I expected!. I was told to take my girlfriend (now fiance) to this romantic spot, since I was looking for the perfect place to propose. It was so small & so crowded, that I heard the complete lives of those next to us! That wasn't the worst, our server Mr. Guido-South Philly, was hitting on my girl the entire time, and thought I was one of his 'corner hanging boys', it was the worst evening ever. The food was not close to anything I expected & as for the singing, to be desired. Just what is so romantic about that?
sasskan. The prices have increased and the quality of food has decreased. Service is not as prompt as in the past. Still good pizza and wonderful opera singing.
Heaven. Stumbled across while looking for small homey restaurants in S Phila. Like landing in heaven. Some of the friendliest and most talented wait staff I have ever encountered. The singing is as professional as it gets. Have gone back and taken friends who were as enchanted as we were. Food is wonderful especially calamari appetizer with hot peppers. We come from AC and love to sample S Phila restaurants. If there is one better, I do not know where it is. Do not be turned off by the exterior that looks like a pizza shop. Take your lover for a very romantic dinner.
