food does not live up to it's menu description.
Cheese, cheese and more cheese
We went for a light bite and some drinks, the service was attentive and friendly. Mostly we ordered seafood dishes but when they arrived we were surprised by most of our selections. One was meant to be a combination of lobster, scallops and other seafood in a dish with cheese and peppers, at first I thought it was just me not tasting any seafood but others had ordered it and had the same experience. I turned over the huge gob of melted cheese only to find more cheese and peppers for $15.00, that's not my idea of value. They even covered the oysters with cheese. When I complained to our waiter he went to the manager, who then went to the chef, who told us that's the way it is. At the end they presented us with the bill which they had deducted the price of one dish. We expected more and were very disappointed in the food. I would sum this up by saying the food served does not begin to live up to it's description on the menu and I would never go back, not with all the other great restaurants in Philadelphia!
Non Consistent. Yes this resturant is beautiful, and the servers are authentic and knowledgeable but why go out to eat when you can cook a better steak at home? We Americans dine out so that we don't have to pull out the pans and wait in a grocery store lines. I gave Los Catrines/Tequila's three chances to 'fix itself' in it's kitchen and they blew it. I left disappointed AGAIN. Yes I admit, I kept returning for the romantic setting and the friendly staff. The bottom line is If you can't cook consistent food, I will not drop that $90.00 again no matter how good the margaritta's are. Drinks, a smile and a comfortable chair are a small part of a complete meal.
Go here and eat!!! You won't regret it!. Everytime I have been to Tequila's it has been consistently AWESOME!!! The food is so tasty and well prepared, the portions are filling, the quality is outstanding, and the drinks are a perfect compliment to your meal. The salsa is so fresh and delicious that I wish they sold it in a grocery store! I could literally eat it with a spoon and be in heaven. There is such a variety on the menu that you could satisfy any picky eater and have an amazing dining experience. Not to mention, the service (although they usually have thick spanish accents) is impeccable! They are hardworking and very attentive to any needs you might have and are friendly to top it off-which is priceless especially in a city like Philadelphia that is known for it's rude service and so-so food.
Some true standouts on the menu. I've been to Tequila's only one time so far (of course I'll go again). We decided to sit sidewalk on a Wed night. We were seated immediately, I noticed even the sidewalk tables were elegantly covered with thick white tablecloths. We didn't go beyond the entrance but the inside areas looked well done and intimate. The service was friendly and competent. The chips and salsa were brought out quickly and were stellar. The chips were extremely crisp and flavorful, homemade. Honestly in my mind the standout of the experience was these chips (which isn't a shot at the remainder of the meal- I just enjoyed them that much). The salsas were a trio: one thick, one watery, and the third a very spicy mix of halved jalapenos and onions. awesome. The house margarita was very good, not spectacular. One minus for us was the vegetarian courses were non-existent. My girlfriend, a vegetarian, ended up ordering a kobe beef salad, hold the beef. She had mixed thoughts. I suspect that had the kobe been involved, it would have been an entirely different experience for the carnivorously inclined. I ordered a mango/grouper stuffed poblano pepper that was great. A unique dish, very well done. Pricey, but I will definitely come back.
Hands down best of philly!!. I have been eating here since about 1993 when it was in it's original location down the street and I can honestly say I have never had a bad meal! Let me first say that Tequilas is a 5 star restraunt so if you want cheap please eat at Taco Bell. I eat at the restraunt about every 2-3 months only because it's a haul from were I live in New Jersey, if it was closer I would be thier dailey. The margaritas are the best I've had (I always upgrade the Taquila). The food is always fresh and expertly prepared. And the wait staff is always friendly and diligent. If you want authentic Mexican food and you don't feel like flying south of the border to get it this is the place to go!!
awesome. One of my favorite spots in the city. Don't let the fact that they don't let reservations deter you -- just come a little early to get a table. The staff is warm, the food is delicious...
Awesome atmosphere...spotty service. If you want a fabulous margarita and a place to just shoot the breeze with friends, Tequila's is where it's at. For romance, attentive service, and a peaceful evening...stay home. My husband and I frequently visit Tequila's and we always have a great time. However, we have learned to live with the spotty service and loud ambiance that those fabulous margaritas induce. The food is pretty good - some entrees are hit or miss. Tortilla soup is always a must. Also - ask for margaritas with the top tequila - it makes a world of a difference!
HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE OVERALL!!. My girlfriend and I went with the expectations of a great mexican food and margarita's on a Friday night. The seating was prompt yet, since we were a party of 2, we were stuck against the wall next to a huge loud, obnoxious party of people which seems to be the norm for this place. We got a large pitcher of margarita that was so weak that we had to ask for more liqour. The $43 we paid for it was the most expensive lime drink i have ever had. The waiter was unattentive and was more concerned with his larger parties. If you do order the specials be prepared for extra small portions. Overall a very pathetic experiance. We will never go back.......absolutely nothing romantic about this place at all.
Fun, Sophisticated Mexican.
If you are a fan of Mexican food and would like to experience something better than a taco or burrito, this place is for you. Its popular and often crowded Tequila Bar, makes the time fly as you wait up to 2 hours for a table, but the expertly mixed margaritas make the time fly by.
The tables are well worth the wait, because the menu take Mexican food to another level. Ingeniously prepared entrees combine traditional Mexican fare with a haute style and very fresh ingredients. The wait staff could use a smile on their faces, but the service is very good. This place is best for a larger group of people, as a tiny 2-seater table might make you fill cramped and like you are missing all the fun at the bigger table.
Awesome margaritas, average food. This would have been perfect, except that the mole enchiladas I ordered were served tepid and lacked any real fire or flavor. So too were the oysters (a bigger problem, as the sauces had congealed) and the nachos. The waiter was delightful, however, and the tequilas awesome. I would go back for another try, because if the food was served quickly I imagine it could be quite good.
