New Chef - Not Good. Devils Den is a great place. There beer list is always amazing, pricing is fair, and the people are great.

However in the past month of two they have switched to a new chef who has radically changed the menu. I don't know if its the chef or management but whoever is making the decisions need to wise up. Its not that I mind the change in options, but I mind the change in quality. There previously seasoned fresh fries have now been replaced with frozen fries you can get in any old diner. The sandwiches they kept on the menu are now, in my opinion based on taste, made with less quality ingredients. I loved devils den, they had vegan options, good beer, and food. But lately they need to realize that there customers are not being fooled. We realize we are paying the same price for lesser quality food and are disappointed.

To devils den. Feel free to change the menu but don't go for cheaper ingredients. You use to be a great gastropub and beer bar. You are now a beer bar with ok food. Please consider this before you lose your devoted customers.

Poor waitstaff service. Mon evening 6/15/09 after the rainstorm, there were 3 of us coming into DD for dinner. It wasn't crowded in the dining area. Only 3 other tables and I believe 2 already received their bill.

We sat down and the waiter gave us our menus.

After that - we were completely ignored.

Not even drink orders were taken.

We sat and waited, menus down and closed - I signaled to the bartender who walked by to get some service - he acknowledged and spoke to the waitstaff.

And still we waited.

Finally, the waiter (the same one who gave us the menu) looked my way and it seemed he was coming toward our table. He quickly turned to the bar area - and nothing.

We waited.

We gave up and went somewhere else.

I live in the neighborhood - and will never return (and will tell all my neighbors).

To the owner of Devil's Den:

When patrons experience good service - they will tell 5 friends. Bad experience, they tell 500 friends.

Horrible experience, they blog and write a scathing review.

Nice beer selection, horrible wait staff. Nice beer selection. Decent food. ABSOLUTE WORST dining room wait service. Seriously, this guy (Francisco, I think) may have been the worst waiter I have ever had, and I eat out a lot. Smug, arrogant, clumsy... and worst of all inattentive to the extreme to a large group of respectful diners. It was uncanny how ill-suited this guy was to deal with the public. I entertain a lot of well-paying folks in this town, and I will NEVER return to this place. Too bad, really.

At Devil's Den 23 ounces = 16 ounces. My most recent trip to Devil?s Den was a couple of months ago, so things may have changed; however, I just looked at their menu and they still have the 23 ounce beers listed. When we were there we were suspect about the honesty of this claim and we poured the water from a standard pint glass into what they were calling a 23-ounce glass, and it filled the entire glass. One of the people in our group went up to the bartender to ask him how many ounces were in the ?23-ounce? glass, and initially dismissed him. He then casually agreed that it must be 23 ounces, but he was not completely sure!! While the food is good enough for pub fare, it does not make up for getting ripped off and then rudely dismissed by the uninformed (or purposely misleading) bartender and wait staff.

According to co-owner Erin Wallace, any sought after or hard to score keg or case of beer from Brussels is either at Monk's Café or Devil's Den. She's not just boasting: Devil's Den has 16 rotating taps and a beer menu - with Duchess de Bourgogne, Petruse and St. Bernarduse, to name a few -that reads like a novel. The food menu is more quotidian as it features mussels, grilled meats and small plates. The highlight is the game that may be lamb, ostrich or buffalo on any given day. The crowd comes from across the city and within the not-quite-up-and-coming neighborhood to learn about fine beers from patient and knowledgeable staff that help patrons discover and enjoy unfamiliar brews.
