Editorial Review for Grocery Cafe and Market – by James Zeleniak
In Short
In the old days the onetime wig shop reflected the colorful yet creepy vibe of a faded downtown quarter. These days, reconstruction is the order of the day. Enter Grocery: a bright, modern, gourmet shop and cafe where patrons refill bottles of haute olive oil and prepared foods come in the way of gourmet rotisserie chickens. Even bacon-infused brussel sprouts appeal. Chef/owner Marcie Turney owns the popular Lolita around the block with partner Valerie Safran.

A great place for sandwichs, soups and salads with a refreshing twist. Most of the food items are winners but some of the fares seem a little pricey. My last trip there i was met with somewhat rude staff that acted as if I ruined their saturday night . It isn't that hard to smile or say thanks once in a while. Also, i would avoid certain foods at the end of the day because they are all prepped ahead of time. Some of the meats and vegetables gets a bit on the dry side when sitting too long. I think that when business dies down they should make fresh sandwichs for people.
Pros: good variety and refreshingly unique
Cons: bit pricey and certain staff could be more friendlier.

the market, on the corner of 13th and chestnut, has a fabulous salad bar. everything on it is gourmet, delicious. it's a bit pricey at $8/lb but it's worth every penny. seriously, they should get an award for making food this delicious so easily accessible -on a salad bar! but, mind you, the staff could use a little help. they're pretty to look at but seem deficient in knowing that communicating is an important part of their job. like "hello", "how are you", "your total is . . . ", "thanks and have a great day" -nope, these are all missing when you plunk down your money for their product. if you can look past that, you're set. but, it's so terribly "philly" to have poor customer service. i do expect more from a place with such yummy food.
