good food, ok service. I made reservations this past Friday night. I called and confirmed the reservations also reiterate that it was my boyfriend's bday and I would like a candle in his dessert. I was reassured that it would not be a problem. We got there for our 8pm reservation, they couldn't find my name and when she did we were told our table was not ready and to return in 20 minutes. We were had to go to the bar down the street- due to the lack of room inside. (Mind you it was not a warm and fuzzy night for a walk) We came back still hoping that the rest of the evening would run more smoothly, then our grand arrival. After we were seated, the busboy came over and gave up water and corked our bottle, however I had to flag down the hostess to get us menus. Our waiter came over, he was very cordial and knowledgeable about the menu. The filet mignon carpaccio was my favorite- I highly recommend it! He had the caesar salad and was quite happy with it, we then split a veal and chicken raviolis, again our taste buds were pleased. He then got the steak and I got the Osso Buco. He said his steak was good, unfortunately my entree was very salty and as a huge fan of dish- there was no bone marrow to speak off- which is the best part of the whole dish!! Finally, dessert came, no candle. I was actually really upset considering the party across the way had a five alarm fire on their dessert!! I decided at the end of the meal that I was going to ask to speak with the manager about our experience. As the check came- a waiter, that had been their 2 weeks came dashing over apologized with a piece of cheesecake and candle on the house. He said he had caught some of my glances and went to the hostess to see if their were any special request on my reservation and she stated that in fact I had requested a candle. I am grateful that they did put an effort to rectify their mistake, but my relaxing romantic dinner fell short of that. Overall, I'd try it again, maybe it was an off night, hopefully.
Food A-, Ambiance B+, Service C+. Branzino is one of those neighborhood restaurants you just keep going back to because it is consistent, pleasant and perfect for a low-key dinner. Although the food is very good and always well prepared the service is very unpolished. We walked in last Saturday night to be greeted by a brusque hostess who wanted to know when our reservation was. It turned we mistakenly made a reservation for the following night, but her insistence that we did not have a reservation was heard by all guests in the room as the space is quite small and she was talking to us from the back of the room. After 5 minutes of arguing we were finally seated and from then on the evening was pleasant. It is a very casual place with a varied menu and the grilled whole fish is perfect.
No Negatives During Restaurant Week Dinner.
The branzino was OK, I've had better. Ditto for the mussels appetizer. The desserts (chocolate mousse cake and tiramisu) were light and tasty, not too rich. The gnocchi dish was awesome. Service was fine. We enjoyed sidewalk dining, with a full menu during a busy Restaurant Week. Would definitely return to this BYOB, given the reasonably-priced menu.
We experienced no problems during a time when some might be expected, so I'm confused by the negative comments regarding poor and rushed service. We even lingered to finish our wine after dessert. Maybe it was the actions of a single server who no longer works there.
Good food, service and price. Don't miss the pasta!.
Here's a restaurant that has everything. Good food. Nice staff with a serious attention to service but not overwhelming and very good value. I went with a friend on a Tues night for the first time and returned the following week with 3 more friends. The bill was VERY reasonable. About $30 per person... splitting appetizers between 2. The pasta is spectacular. I had an appetizer of 5 raviolis, every bite of which was a treat.)
The main courses... everything I tried was a good, simple, solid recipe. Lots of choices on the menu... and they seem to always offer specials of the day. Don't forget the wine. The state store is 5 blocks away!
Great food, good night. I went to Branzino with a party of 6 on Mother's Day. Despite other reviews out there, our service was excellent (maybe b/c it was a holiday). The food was delicious - I highly recommend the Avocado and Octopus appetizer - one of my favorite appetizers in the city thus far. Definitely more upscale in regards to ambiance (as compared to other BYOs). Good food and great location.
Rushed, rude servie.
This is one of the few times I felt compelled to write a review. Amazingly, I read the other reviews for this restaurant and many echoed our experience. We were a party of six and were also rushed and also asked to leave for a following reservation. After only being their an hour, I hardly felt our table was loitering. Prior to ordering dessert, the waiter informed us we had twenty minutes to order and complete dessert/coffee. We skipped the remaining course after such rude behavior. The food was overall average. The cost was approx. $40 pp (without coffee and dessert). The nail in the coffin is by far the service.
With so many other fantastic restaurants downtown & wonderful BYOBs, I'd definitely skip this establishment.
Speaking From Experience as a Customer and Former Server--The Worst Restaurant. I set out to have an enjoyable evening with my 5 of my friends at Branzino's. Unfortunately, the service was of the poorest quality I have ever experienced. We had a reservation for 8:30pm on Friday. I was called on my cell phone at work the day before by the manager. He was pleading for us to push back our reservation to 9:00, "or even 8:45 would really help us." Having worked in several restaurants, I assumed they were in a critical predicament. We agreed to move our reservations to 8:45. We sat down at 8:45, and were rushed the entire meal. At 10:15 the manager told us he had a reservation for the table at 9:30, and that the party had been waiting. As we finished our wine at 10:30, he came back to our table and told us not to worry, "the party has been sat somewhere else." I have never had this experience before, both as a customer and as a server. I would not recommend Branzino's to anyone.
Created an account to say ABSOLUTLY WONDERFUL. I ate at Branzino?s with my father last summer and had an absolutely wonderful experience. Despite our outside seating and the fact that the restaurant had several full tables, our service was extremely prompt, professional, and our server seemed to not want us to leave. The food was utterly superb. I had a tender lamb dish with aged balsamic vinegar drizzled on top, which I still dream of to this day and my father had an excellent seafood pasta dish. Branzino?s is definitely not appropriate for a large group and is better suited for couples or groups no bigger then four. My experience however, was fantastic from the service, to the food, to the romantic decor and I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for deliciously sophisticated Italian cuisine and a wonderfully pleasant environment.
Gracious and very good.
The two recent bad reviews on service had me concerned, but I decided to give Branzino a try anyway and it was a real success. Start with the setting--the decor is a little more upscale than many BYOs and the tables are not crammed together. We went pre-orchestra at 6:00 and the meal was perfectly paced. The wine service was better than most restaurants that are charging you a 200% markup, and of course Branzino wasn't making a penny on the wine. This was consistent with the attentive service throughout the meal.
The specials sounded good, but we stayed with the printed menu. Watercress salad with carmelized pears and prosciutto and a lentil and beet salad both were excellent. The whole branzino fish (I think it was the most expensive item on the menu at $24), expertly filleted at tableside, was excellent. The ravioli filled with squash and cheese was very good. We shared a slice of triple chocolate mousse cake that was not as intense as the name led me to believe, but nonetheless was very good.
There were other items on the extensive menu that also looked good. We'll be back to try some of them.
Impeccable!. A friend and I came to Bronzino during Restaurant Week. From the moment we entered, we were escorted to a beautiful table and the wait staff couldn't have been more attentive. The Buffalo mozzerella and spinach/walnut salad appetizers were a great start to a superb meal. The chef prepared a special course: potato gnocci that was to die for! The highlight was the entree which was filleted bronzino. Dessert reminded me of small frozen Dove bars. But it was more involved than that. Garnished with these giant red raspberries, it was drizzled with a raspberry sauce. What an excellent experience during what was, I'm sure, a busy and hectic week for Philly restaurants. We will most definetly be back.
