Good dancehall music and good food..
I took my wife and her twin sister to the Reef for their birthday. I'm of a West Indian/Caribbean background, and I'm always looking for places to enjoy some nice caribbean food, which is sparce in Philly.
We went on a Saturday evening around 7:30pm. The wait was not long. Our food was excellent. My wife, sister-in-law, and I all ordered different dishes. I had the jerk chicken and I was impressed. The mixed drinks went well with our food. The bartender knew what she was doing that night.
After we were done eating, we headed upstairs to the lounge/club area. We enjoyed drinks on the house, and some great dancehall music. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience and I look forward to going there again.
Overall a good experience.
My boyfriend and I went to Reef early Saturday evening. I was a little disappointed when we walked in because it was pretty dead inside. However, the staff was really friendly and they had some good drink specials. I ordered the crabcakes and they were so yummy. Seriously delicious. My boyfriend also liked his meal but I don't remember what he had.
Things seemed to be picking up as we left. I definitely think atmosphere is a big part of the dining experience. I like the feel of the place but wish there were more people around to add to vibe. All in all, I went there for the food and was really pleased with my meal.
HORRIBLE. This place is HORRIBLE! DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY OR TIME! I called ahead of time and reviewed the website to find out about the atmosphere-both the person I spoke with and the site were deceiving. The reggae is 10 plus years old, the crowd is very old, the drinks are horrible (i.e. the cheapest liquor possible) and the management is rude. This is a hole in the wall and sad excuse for a club/lounge. Go to Old City where the cover is free, the music is current, and the atmosphere is modern.
Best Caribbean Lounge/ Restaurant in town. My girlfriend and I made this place our go to spot. The atmosphere is nice and the food is always great. We have been to this place 7 or 8 times. Never had a bad experience there. I just read the bad review posted below and felt bad for those people. I never recieved such service the times we have been there. I would be upset also if I got that service. I hope they fired that person that caused that problem. Anyway, as i said we have a great time. Sometimes we do dinner downstairs and then go up stairs to the club/dance floor part. Cant beat that. Dinner and dancing in the same place. If you do dinner then want to check out upstairs, they stamp your hand, waiving the charge to go upstairs. They charge only if you come in and want to go to the club area. Food is great, music and drinks are also good and its not too pricey. This is one of our top 5 places to go out when we do go out in philly.
Please Come Again.
This is the new manager of the Reef Restaurant and Lounge and we greatly apologize for the horrible time you had last summer. It is almost a year later and I am sure there is 90% differnace in staff, and service.
So come check us out and please give us another review.
Are you kidding me?.
I was there for happy hour and the bartender kept trying to charge me for imported beer when I ordered domestic. Fine, it's only a dollar difference, but it's the principle. So we finished with the happy hour and got a table for six of us. The waitress came over and asked what we would like to order. We asked for a couple minutes to look over the menu before ordering.
A couple minutes turned to a few minutes, then several more minutes and we began to wonder if they were ever going to take our order. Eventually, another girl walks over and takes our order without writing anything down. I remember thinking that she must have an extraordinary memory. I was wrong. Ten minutes later, the original waitress come back and asks to review our order.
Sure enough, it wasn't accurate. We waited and waited some more. I had asked for a beer and because I didn't get one, I walked over to the bar and got one myself. After a total of 50 minutes without geting our food, we got up to leave. The busboy said that our food was just about to come out. I told him that after 50 minutes, we just weren't waiting any longer. 50 minutes! That's almost an HOUR!
I had read the review "OMG!!! If you love great food, and great service... " and couldn't wait to try everything mentioned. I told my party about the review so we had originally ordered everything from that sole review. We were sadly disappointed. I want to go back and actually try the food, but I worked at a restaurant before and knew they'd remember me as I would remember anyone who got up and left. Sorry, but I won't go back. I'll just look for another Caribbean restaurant with actual service. If this site allowed negative stars, I'd give them as many as I could. As it stands, only go to this restaurant if you have A LOT of time to-kill. Too bad I have to give them a rating. I feel horrible giving them a star. NO STARS!
Good thing Lorenzo and Sons Pizza was closeby. At least they're reliable.
OMG!!! If you love great food, and great service....
... This is it!!!
My friends and I came from New York to Philly for the day, and I suggested we visit South Street. We didn't really want the sloppyness of all those cheesteak joints, so we stumbled onto this resturant.
The decor was nice, the music fit the mood, we got great tables, and the bartender was amazing. All this, before the food came.
All I can say is WOW!!! Amazingly authentic Jamaican food. Definitely try the fried calamari (melt in your mouth), the jerked chicken and the stewed oxtail. The peas & rice was tasty, and the plantains were firm, not mushy. (I hate that.) The bartender was mixing right across from us some really colorful and creative looking drinks. He even offered us a taste of a few before we made a choice.
In the end, the service staff was attentive and friendly, the food was hot and tasty, and the prices were reasonable. I hear they even throw parties on the weekend. We'll be back a again!!
