Best experience ever. So I came in late night after my shift at another bar. I was greeted first by the outstanding bartender named candace. Who poured my draft beer perfectly. While sitting at the end of the bar I met the waitress who sorta resembled liv tylor. Her and the bartender both reccomended the paula santo. It was muy beuno but it was no kbs. Overall it was a very pleasant experience and I will be back again.
Lots of bars. The South Philadelphia tap room is in a bad part of a very violent city, and I recommend to anyone who risks an enjoyable night to think twice about going to a place that has expensive average tasting food, a small bar with limited seating, uber- played out wanna-be fancy beer, and never any pretty ladies. There are bars everywhere... why go here?
Constructive Criticism.
I have no beef with the staff (from Meredith all the way down the line, they are what keeps me comin in), or the beer (except that mediocre Phila Brewing Co stuff ... please lose it).
My complaint is primarily with the food. Everything went up by $3 as soon as they changed chefs. They dropped fries for a while and then brought them back but for $3 extra (burger w/o fries $10-12; burger w/ fries $13-15!). The menu became unnecessarily fancy and pricey without much more in the way of taste or size; I miss the old pub steak, the brisquet, and the french onion soup, all reasonably priced, tasty, and bigger. If this was No Libs, maybe it'd be fine; but this is South Philly: keep it classy, tasty and affordable.
Give me my french fries back!. I don't like potato chips with my food. Give me my french fries back, or give me an option...not a $7 option. Sometimes I just want fries with my beer. Isn't SPTR a bar?
They wont give you french fries!. I used to go there all the time until they got a new chef. He actually refuses to serve anything but potato chips with the food, which means no fries- not even as a separate side. What kind of bar is this??
Total Disappointment. Went for Founder's Beer Night and was totally disappointed with the service. Waited first 1/2 hour for for waitress to acknowledge me to take a drink order. Ordered a round of Founder's Kentucky Breakfast Stout, rare type of beer, and was told that our round was poured and stolen from the bar and there was no more. Ordered dinner and our soup never came and manager came over to comp us, but it took 20 more minutes for the wrong soup to show up at the table. There was more bad stuff, but I'll leave it at that - don't go!
I can't say enough good things. Everything I look for in a bar the Tap Room has covered. Not too crowded with a cozy atmosphere? Check. Great beer selection both on tap and in bottles? Check. Great food with a nice variety to the menu? Check. Great jukebox? Check. Reasonable prices? Check. Basically, you can't go wrong with the Tap Room. The food is on par with any other bar/pub in Philadelphia, and it might honestly be the best in the city. The appetizers such as the Soku Tuna and Flash Fried Calamari are downright outstanding. The sandwiches and the entrees are very good as well. Suffice to say I've never had anything bad off their menu. Good options for non-meat eaters as well. My only criticism of the food would be that a lot of the menu tends to run spicy, which I enjoy, but might put some off. The service is generally good and there's a good amount of parking in the area. A month ago I hadn't even heard of the South Philly Tap Room, now I can't get enough of the place. EDIT 8/9/2008: As you can see from more recent comments, the Tap Room has changed chefs since I wrote this review and unfortunately their menu has suffered drastically. Still a nice spot but no longer one of the best in the city.
Excellent fish tacos.. If you live in South Philadelphia, this very well could be your neighborhood bar. The beer selection is voluminous, featuring many a craft brew such as Dogfish Head and Yard's, and the menu is both hearty and eclectic. The fish tacos with black beans and saffron rice are bright and savory. A highly recommended hang!
One of the greatest bars in Philly. It's fun, it's homey, it's the Tap Room! The service is great and the food is too! My favorite new menu addition is the Korean Bar-b-que beef, which is spicy, but tasty. The beer selection is awesome as well. I am so happy that this is my neighborhood bar.
Editorial Review. Pub offers an extensive beer tap, pub fare and long hours for beer lovers.
