They do everything well, the only downside is the lack of seats. Get there early or be prepared to wait.
Thanks for paying...now move to another table.
Saturday night dinner... waited 30 mins. This is a small restaurant and we were shoved into a small corner. Our waiter came right over, explained the one special, then vanished for 20mins. We then placed our complete order. Had the Whole Grilled Artichoke and some cheese for the appetizer. This took about 25 mins. The appetizers were very good...but 25 min is way too long to wait. Our dinner ( Lobster & Shrimp for me, Pan Seared Diver Scallops for her ) came out about about 15 mins after we finished the apps. Just to make sure we are all on the same timeline: It has now been about 90 mins and we are just getting our main course. The Lobster and Shrimp were very good, but the scallops tasted like lemon was poured over them. We had 1 cup of coffee and no desert ( and no desert was even explained). When the coffee was put down, the waiter took our water bottle and put the check down. I paid the bill as my wife was drinking her coffee. On her last sip of coffee we were ask to move to another table because of a large party coming in. I thought the hostess and waiter were kidding, but unfortunately they were very serious. I explained we just literally paid the bill, drove 1 hour to get here, and have small children...so getting out by ourselves is a real treat. They were adamant about taking our table. We were very offended and walked out. The waitress came out and apologized...which was too little too late. The ironic thing is...they delayed everything from getting us a table all the way up to the main course. But now they want to rush me off to another table !
I would never recommend this place to anyone. So rude in making us move to another table.
Best in CC West. Wonderful service, food is amazing. My wife and I love the place.
We had walked in Christmas Eve after seeing The Nutcracker. We were warmly welcomed and seated promptly, it turned out to be a wonderful and romantic evening to ring in the holiday season. The antipasto selection was delicious and as a reviewer pointed out, the garlic and basil olive oil tasting is a definite must!! My husband had the humongous pappadelle entree and devoured the entire thing! He continuously commented that it was the best pasta he's had in a while, and that is quite a feat coming from a picky Italian pasta lover. I had the delightful filet mignon dish, cooked to perfect medium rare.
I highly recommend this great BYOB for any special occasion or a reason to go out for a good meal.
Love This Place!. The food here is amazing! I first went with three friends during restaurant week and we sampled a bit of each other's food, nothing disappointed. I was so amazed by the flavors in my own entree and appetizer. The basil and garlic olive oils were unbelievable. I've been back once more since and have plans to go again in a few weeks. I tend to go early on weekdays to avoid the waits and the hustle of the late evening crowd and have not experienced any service problems. The last time I was there they actually had a couple of open tables so they were a little relaxed in coming to retrieve our tab as we were ready to go.
Great food outweighs hostess attitude. Wonderful food at this place. Hostess put us off at first, but was soon forgotten when we got our dinner.
Very Poor Customer Service. We tried making reservations for a night during Restaurant Week. Even though they won't usually take reservations for 7:30 on a Friday night they do take them during this special week. When I called I was told by the person answering the phone that they don't take reservations during service hours but she took my name and number and told me I would get a call the next day between 10 and 3. Two days later I was called back but missed the call. When I called them back I had to leave another message and never got any call back. After another message and no call back I decided my money would be better spend at another restaurant.
rude host and waitress, great food. I went with a group of 4 during restaurant week on a Friday at 8:15. We had reservations for 6 but the other couple had canceled an hour before so my friend who made the reservations called to let them know and they still insisted on charging her card $50 for the no shows. When we arrived at the restaurant my friend went to speak with the hostess who was ignorant and rude. She told my friend that she could not get the money back and that was their policy. even though the place was on an hour wait and the table would get filled immediatley. this is a horrible policy and the hostess needs to get a different job, preferabley in a place where she needs no interaction with other people. Our food was great and so was the service until our waitress gave us the dessert menu and reminded us that it is restaurant week and that they were on a wait, implying that we needed to eat our dessert fast and get out. UNBELIEVABLE, seeing as they just charged us an extra $50 for the canceled reservations. I would love to return because the food is good, but the staff is terrible, they need to get some training on how to treat the customers. I would give them four stars for the food and 1 star for the staff.
Worst Service in Center City. A friend and I just had dinner at Mercato for restaurant week. Mind you, this is a recession, it was not as crowded as it could have been. We showed up and waited over half an hour past our reservation time - this is a "work night," lovely how little respect they have for our time, but no apologies, no, instead they deliver to us two salads one WITH SHARDS OF PORCELAIN IN IT. My very polite friend points out to the waitress that there are shards of porcelain (plate? someone else's plate?) in her salad, which she had been chewing and potentially swallowing during her enjoyment of the entire first course. The waitress's response? "Oh, I'm sorry," and walks away. If any of you have watched HBO's "Oz," you will know that putting shards of porcelain or glass in somebody's food can MORTALLY WOUND THEM, if this waitress or her incompetent manager had realized the same and also the legal liability they at that moment had on their hands, they would perhaps have discounted the price of our food, thrown in some favors, but no, only rudeness can follow rudeness at our dear Mercato. I used to love the food at this place but the hostess - tonight is the 28th of January, 2009, whoever worked tonight should be fired - is unbelievably rude, incompetent and unaccomodating - it is hard to savor great food when it takes 30 minutes to sit down after the time for which you made a reservation (when three tables have been set for parties of 3 or more, which you are not, and they have remained sitting there for the entirety of your wait in a drafty doorway). The service is not generally a sore spot but, I'm sorry, if you deliver someone pieces of sharp porcelain in their salad, you should do more than have the waitress (not the chef, not the manager), meekly say, "I'm sorry." I have been a faithful supporter of Mercato for over three years now, after tonight's experience I don't think I will ever go back.
Good food, poor service. Food was excellent, but the hostess and manager were terrible. Very unaccommodating, especially for a large party. We had a party of 6 and they sat us at a cramped table and refused to give us a larger table, even though one was available. Perhaps better for a party of two
Great food and service. I have been to Mercato numerous times since it opened 3 or so years ago and have always enjoyed the food. The kitchen and servers are always consistently on point and I have never had a bad meal there. I never add extra salt to my food when I am out, and therefore do not consider myself a salt-lover. That being said I have always found the food at Mercato to be perfectly seasoned. Additionally, if I were to ever find something at a restaurant that I less than enjoyed eating, I would not hesitate to send it back to the kitchen and ask for the staff to make any necessary changes. I have never been to Mercato during restaurant week, but can honestly say that visiting the restaurant during the week, when one can avoid a wait, has always been a positive experience for me and my family. I would be happy to recommend Mercato to anyone I know and strongly suggest trying the short rib ragu; it's one of my favorites!
