Editorial Review for Sweet Lucy's Smokehouse – by Lauren McCutcheon

In Short
Lucy's stokes her Southern Pride smoker with hickory wood, which imparts its foresty flavors to every inch of tender pork shoulder, dark beef brisket, and succulent whole rotisserie chicken that enters it. Subtle sauce is lightly layered, to show off the meat itself. Ribs are rich, slightly sticky, as are roasted chicken wings, which come with homemade blue cheese dressing. Sides do no wrong: Real mashed potatoes are redolent with garlic.

Insider Tips

When to Go

Busy from lunch through early dinners, Lucy's has been known to let herself run out of cornbread and desserts a couple of hours before closing time.

What to Drink

Home-brewed ice tea is popular, but a B.Y.O.B. policy lets customers wash down their smoked meats the way nature intended: with beer.

The Extras

Collards are fresh and spicy. Baked beans are bacon-laced; macaroni salad is as good as Grandma's. Cucumber salad is refreshing. Corn bread is fluffy and cake-like. A big salad offers low-fat redemption, while oversized chocolate cookies are deliciously sinful.

Tried Swet Lucy's after reading the rave reviews and was not terribly impressed, as the meal itself was mediocre. The chicken was pretty good as were the collard greens, but the pulled pork (which was not all that pulled and was in big chunks), the ribs, and baked beans all suffered from a BBQ sauce that was too reminiscent of tomato paste. The whipped sweet potatoes were just fair. They were very friendly there and had very, very good cornbread though.

I never liked bbq but my friends do. They kept hearing about this place called "Lucy's" but they weren't quite sure of the exact name and nobody knew exactly where it was but we set off anyway on a mission to find what we were told was the best bbq around. After many wrong turns we finally found it (not difficult at all now that we know ...) and it was absolutely worth the round-about trip. It was great fun and I finally understand what people see in bbq! Love it! I'm pretty sure I'm addicted to their ribs. Even standing in the fast-moving line was fun.

Pros: delicious!

Cons: can get crowded
