In Short – Lucy's stokes her Southern Pride smoker with hickory wood, which imparts its foresty flavors to every inch of tender pork shoulder, dark beef brisket, and succulent whole rotisserie chicken that enters it. Subtle sauce is lightly layered, to show off the meat itself. Ribs are rich, slightly sticky, as are roasted chicken wings, which come with homemade blue cheese dressing. Sides do no wrong: Real mashed potatoes are redolent with garlic.

Authentic smoked meats, Great BBQ in Philly!

by DinnerDate69

Went this past Monday for the buffet - every monday night, 5-8 (I think) is all you can eat BBQ - and let me tell you... the best $19 I have spent in a loooong time. Their BBQ sauce is just indescribable, it makes everything taste incredible. The smoked meats are to die for, especially the pulled brisket and pulled pork. Being the pig I am, I sampled just about everything at the buffet, and man is it hard to choose when you only have so much space on your plate! Ive had the aforementioned brisket, pulled pork, pulled chicken, house chili, smoked wings, smoked tenderloin, and of course, the ribs. I guess alot of people judge a BBQ place by its ribs... The ribs on this particular night were not the best I have had, but I understand that on a buffet line, they may not spend as much time in the smoker so I forgive them. They were still tender, the BBQ sauce really makes them, I wouldnt describe them as "falling off the bone" though. All the meats have that signature pink color, indicating real time over the fire. The pile of logs outside in the parking lot will confirm that. The chili is super thick and meaty - definately not made w/ ground beef, it appeared to be shredded brisket, but my God was it good. The smoked wings, let me just tell you - dip wing in BBQ sauce, insert into mouth, bite down gently, pull out bone. Unreal. The smoked tenderloin is cooked in a mushroom flavored sauce, and is a pleasent change. Even the sides are great, I was especially fond of the garlic mash potatoes and the cornbread, which was awesome. You can even get spicy shrimp, smoked salmon and beef ribs and cookies if you've got room. Overall, you owe yourself to check this place out. Go on a Monday, and gorge yourself on some of the city's best BBQ year-round. But get there before 6, because the line gets long.

  • Pros: Authentic smoked meats, all-you-can-eat on Mondays, Great Value
  • Cons: Smaller place, gets crowded, off the beaten path

Decent BBQ for above the Mason-Dixon Line

by bluehensfan

Tried Swet Lucy's after reading the rave reviews and was not terribly impressed, as the meal itself was mediocre. The chicken was pretty good as were the collard greens, but the pulled pork (which was not all that pulled and was in big chunks), the ribs, and baked beans all suffered from a BBQ sauce that was too reminiscent of tomato paste. The whipped sweet potatoes were just fair. They were very friendly there and had very, very good cornbread though.

yummy and fun

by kateyjo

I never liked bbq but my friends do. They kept hearing about this place called "Lucy's" but they weren't quite sure of the exact name and nobody knew exactly where it was but we set off anyway on a mission to find what we were told was the best bbq around. After many wrong turns we finally found it (not difficult at all now that we know ...) and it was absolutely worth the round-about trip. It was great fun and I finally understand what people see in bbq! Love it! I'm pretty sure I'm addicted to their ribs. Even standing in the fast-moving line was fun.

  • Pros: delicious!
  • Cons: can get crowded

The Details on Sweet Lucy's Smokehouse

When to Go:

Busy from lunch through early dinners, Lucy's has been known to let herself run out of cornbread and desserts a couple of hours before closing time.

What to Drink:

Home-brewed ice tea is popular, but a B.Y.O.B. policy lets customers wash down their smoked meats the way nature intended: with beer.

The Extras:

Collards are fresh and spicy. Baked beans are bacon-laced; macaroni salad is as good as Grandma's. Cucumber salad is refreshing. Corn bread is fluffy and cake-like. A big salad offers low-fat redemption, while oversized chocolate cookies are deliciously sinful.
